How Was Romney's Convention Speech (Please answer only if you support Romney)

How do you rate Romney’s convention speech? I’d like to limit this thread to only Romney supporters, please, as I don’t want Obama supporters to skew the results.

By my own rules, I can’t vote, since I’m voting for Johnson.

I don’t support Romney, so I’m not going to vote.

But I think you’re going to get a lot of anti-Romney people voting, anyway. It probably would have been a better idea to make the poll results visible, so that you could see who was voting and for which option. I’m an Obama supporter who watched Romney’s speech, and as much as I dislike the man and his politics, I would never characterize his speech as an epic fail. If that is indeed the honest opinion of a Romney supporter, I’d be interested in reading their reasoning for their choice.

It also would have been nice to have a “I’m not eligible to vote in this poll” choice so that the rest of us could click that and then just see the poll results displayed, instead of having to keep clicking “show results.”

It’s a small thing, though.

I thought he came across less stiff than normal–a few really nice moments, like when he talked about his 5 boys. That was important for him. He didn’t provide a lot of details, but I didn’t expect he would.

My hope for him was that he’d hammer home the “Are you better off now? Did Obama deliver what he promised?” message; that he’d provide that in a context of their differences (at a high level) over the role of government and the individual, and why that is so critical to our nation right now; and that he come across with more warmth and “humanity” that he typically has (not a high threshold).

Not a home run, but I thought he did pretty good.

ETA: I’d be interested in how the undecideds perceived it.

You realize that only including Romney supporters is what skews the results, right?

I believe if the point is to find out whether he did or did not meet or exceed his supporters’ expectations and whether they feel more encouraged or not, then it’s a fair limitation.

Not voting on this poll, on the honor system.

I ranked him in the middle. Not bad. Not great. Workmanlike. He don’t speechify as perty as the other guy, that’s for sure.

Are there enough Romney supporters on this MB to make up a statistically significant sample?

I didn’t watch much of the Republican convention. I watched maybe 5 minutes of Ann Romney’s speech, about the same for Ryan, and none of Mitt’s speech. But I’m not voting for Mitt, and it wouldn’t matter if I was anyway, what with me living in CA and all…

Well in 7 hours, we’ve had 6 Romney supporters show up. Sounds about right.

I don’t mean for this to be antagonistic. I’m honestly curious. You seem to say that his oratory skills being less than Obama’s is some kind of good thing.

Doesn’t it bother you though that he isn’t better at public speaking and at getting his message out? I mean, he’s been running for president for the better part of a decade. Shouldn’t he be better at it by now?

Up to now I wouldn’t have called myself a Romney supporter, though I’d vote for him over the alternative. But I was impressed in that it was workmanlike, and workmanlike is just what the country is yearning for now. Contrasting pledges to heal the planet and slow the rise of the ocean on the one hand with a simple pledge to “help you and your family.” was brilliant.

I did think there was a sharp edge of nationalism I don’t remember noticing other presidential elections. I think a clear subtext in this campaign will be “Obama may have been born here, but that doesn’t mean he knows what it means to be an American.” That’s a sentiment that has some ugly echoes in American history, but confined to subtext it’d be very hard to defend against if such a message gains any traction. Possibly very effective, but I’m not necessarily happy with it.

Last time around, America swooned over a debonair, fast talking chap who promised the moon and had a touch of exotic mystery. Well. We saw how that worked out. Now she’s ready to settle down with this new fellow her parents introduced to her. He’s not so romantic, maybe even a bit plodding, but by all accounts he’ll work hard and be a good provider.

Oh, no, not at all. I wish he had the skill of an Obama, Reagan, even Clinton. It’s a huge asset to any politician.

Only that he’s not as effective as a public speaker. If her were, I think he’d be able to rally more people. There’s are plenty of people who probably give an amazing speech but I wouldn’t want as President. Obama being one. But I’m MUCH more concerned about a candidate’s qualifications for the job and his approach to things.

Totally agree.

Yeah, wow. Cuz I’m sure Obama has never talked about helping American families. Romney really is brilliant.

“Exotic”? “Mystery”?

You sure eat up those talking points.

I know, right? Like, I’ve got this cool bike and I play guitar in this band, and she dumps me for this square who just graduated from dental school!

Pshffft. She’ll be back.

You’re describing Michael Dukakis.

Versus Poppy Bush. Neither one of them is Mr. Romance, compared to the Gipper. [Wistful look] Well, it’s a tossup between them, but I’ll play it safe and try the nice boy who’s heir to his family business. (Dear diary: but if I start feeling unsatisfied after a couple of years, my eye might go wandering toward those bad boys I just can’t seem to stay away from. Maybe even that hunky smooth talking Arkansas car salesman I saw at the convention this year . . .)

Well I disagree that the Obama administration has been a failure. The fiscal cliff is rather clever- it turns the inability of Congress to function into a lever. Obviously this opinion disqualifies me from the official voting, but between you and me I thought Romney came off as professional and focused. He was no boob, and in real-time his fact-check issues flew under my radar way, way more than Ryan’s.

If he has a pulse and a soul and can surround himself with people who know what
they’re doing we’re better off than with the fraud that is Obama.
