How will Marvel handle the 2011 'Thor" movie release? Will fundamentalists object?

Yup, that is the perfect Thor.

The Golden Compass was a pretty overt swipe at Christianity though, and more specifically, Catholicism. That’s hardly analogous to a simple story about ancient pantheons.

Remember too that Thor already appeared years ago in Adventures in Babysitting.

Is that Alexander Skarsgård? Rumors are that he’s being courted for this movie, so if it was just a guess on your part, it’s a damn good one

I don’t see why fundies would care any more about this than say, Batman. They don’t believe the Norse gods existed, so how is it any different to them any other made up character?

Ironically, it’s my understanding that the Christian cross’s resemblance to the symbol representing Thor’s hammer was part of what helped the Norse convert so easily to Christianity.

Exactly. It never works; such people only accept total conformity to their dogma. And since they can’t actually agree with each other on dogma, even completely giving in won’t keep them from complaining; satisfying Fundie A will offend Fundies B and C. And probably plenty of non-fundies, for that matter.

A real world example would be the types who think that Catholics “aren’t really christian” and that the Pope is the Whore of Babylon. Any portrayal that treats Catholics as non-evil will enrage the former, and any portrayal of the Catholic Church that would make the former happy would seriously annoy Catholics.

I’ve read, over on I09, that they’re gonna describe Thor as…an alien.

Barph!

I think you’re confusing Thor with Pornothor.

“Don’t you understand? I’m Thor!”
“Well, you should have used more lube.”

This was pretty funny
