How would SD be different if the topics DIDN'T get bumped up when someone replied?

Suppose that, when someone made a reply to a topic, it didn’t get bumped to the top.

Would it be as fun? Would it be as easy to read and get around?

Yes, that would obviously mean that the topics would all just stay where they were when someone responded to them. So would it make any difference to you? Would you be able to get used to it? Would you be able to post on here if it was like that?

Nah. I like it bumping a thread back to the top so you can follow the most active threads. I’d hate to have to drudge through inactive threads to find where the “action” is.

My guess, and I have nothing concrete on which to base this, is that the SDMB policy would be to move threads with no replies in the past week to something like “MPSIMS OLD” and keep those that had generated at least post every week (not on average but reliably, so to speak) in “MPSIMS NEW”.

So every new thread would push a current thread down one space.

IIRC the current browser setup displays 30 threads per page. GQ gets that many on a good day, which means that your thread might drop by as much as a page per day.

Incidentally, I’m on a message board where threads don’t bump. As soon as they go to the second page, they die.

I have seen a few message boards like this and honestly if the SDMB went like that I probably wouldn’t come around as much because there wouldn’t be as many good threads because they would die along with all the average threads.
Atleast here once something is on the 2nd page and you want to respond to it, it’s not a waste of time because it will come right back to the top.
