Post to Top. Over and Over

Does a “quick reply” move the post to the top again? As compared to a regular reply.
Sometimes I like to reply to an old post but don’t want to bump it to the top.

Yes. New replies always move a thread to the top of the list, regardless of how it’s posted.

On replying to very old posts:

  • In some forums (specifically, in IMHO, MPSIMS, GD, and the Pit), reviving old threads is frowned upon. Seriously frowned upon. That’s largely because the people who posted to them are often not around to respond, and it seems unfair to bring up an old discussion after the other side has gone home. If you have a substantive remark, the preferred approach is to start a new thread and provide a link to the old one.
  • In other forums (specifically, CoCC, CoSR, and Cafe Society), reviving old threads is OK under some circumstances. Basically, there’s less personal debate/discussion in those forums, so the unfairness that people can’t respond is reduced. But again, if you want to post to an old thread, it should be a substantive post.

In both cases, the idea is NOT to revive old threads with simple passing remarks, like “I agree” or “Is not!” So, if you want to post to an old thread but don’t want the post brought to the top, that probably means your post isn’t substantive enough in your own mind. Best bet is that it won’t be viewed as substantive by others, either, so let it go.
