Brewster’s Millions (the Richard Pryor remake) used this idea. Pryor’s character bought a rare stamp and his antagonist said he had screwed up because the publicty over the sale had made the stamp go up in value, so Brewster was richer than he had been before. Then he got a cheezy “wish you were here” postcard from Brewster that had been mailed with the stamp.
Earlier this year, there were newspaper articles about the guy that spent something like $27,000 in one night at Score’s without even trying. With a little effort I’m sure you could top out $50,000 a night and go through your million in less than three weeks.
