Well, this is weird- I grew up in New York City, and am still only 43% Yankee!
Perhaps that’s because I didn’t learn about many of the things mentioned on that quiz until I went South! When I lived in New York, I never encountered a drive-through liquor store, and never knew anybody whose house or trees had been toilet papered. So, the only words/phrases I know for those things are Southern.
While I was in the Navy I made the point of annoying shipmates by pointing out that I was a “Dammed Yankee,” since I was from New England, and planned to go back there. And any old american can be a Yankee. Being a “Dammed Yankee” is a special privelege.
By the way, it is not a water fountain, a bubbler, or drink fountain. It is a scuttlebutt.
They really have drive-through liquor stores, though? I’m surprised they don’t have them up this way, then, given how many people from MA cross the border to get beer and other alcohol at a less taxed rate.
Born in Mississippi, Birminghamm, AL until I was eight, Atlanta, GA until I was 20, the Florida panhandle through 22, and Macon GA now. There was a short stint in Kentucky, too.
I am surprised my score wasn’t higher. Then again, I trained myself out of certain Southern-isms after hearing a recording of myself speaking at age 7. 'at was bayud, y’know?
Lessee…
born in Mississippi
Birmingham, AL until age eight
Atlanta, GA through age 20
Florida panhandle (which is really just an extension of South GA) through age 22
Macon, GA currently
I am surprised my score isn’t higher. I did train myself out of a few Southern-isms though, after hearing my recorded voice from a play in third grade. The drawl was palpable.
That’s about right for me. I was born in New York, and raised in Michigan (and mom strill has an identifiable Brooklyn accent).
I’d say that the test is good, but it does have some problems. We call those little bugs Roly Polies around here. For question #7, I’d use the “you guys” variant listed under “you all.” This should have been one of the main answers.
Hmm, lived in Michigan my entire life. I found it odd how they kept using ‘Great Lakes Area’ as a definitive regional accent, when so much of Ohio and Michigan and Indiana is still southern-flavored. :dubious:
And shouldn’t the grocery holder debate really have four answers? Cart, buggy, carriage and basket?
43% Yankee (just barely)
And I grew up in New Jersey.
I guess I didn’t pick up any of the bad habits because I spent most of my spare time conversing with myself.
