I’ve tried similarly to close threads to no avail. Is there some trick, combination of keystrokes, etc that he employed?

The trick is getting a mod to agree the thread should be closed. The combination of keystrokes entails either posting as such in the thread or PMing a mod and asking nicely.
Wait until you see him issue a fatwah.

In all seriousness, I reported my own post suggesting the thread be closed because Jonathan had made his ruling and further discussion seemed A) pointless and B) more likely to lead into yet another tiresome thread on whether or not black people were stupid and why it’s outrageous to suggest white people who claim black people are stupid shouldn’t be considered racist.
Hmm… Let’s test this out.
Having consulted the relevant Ahadith as well as the writings of the Prophet Cecil(Peace Be Upon Him) I proclaim that if calling a fellow poster a “racist” is to be considered an ad hominem and an insult comparable to calling that person a “jerk” then just as “being a jerk” is a punishable offense so should “being a racist”.
If the companions and followers of Imam Cecil, God’s last apostle, are correct that racist is a “megaton insult” “the worst non-illegal thing you can be accused of” and “the worst thing you can call someone” and then “being a racist” must be at least as bad as “being a jerk” since no serious person would argue that “jerk” is the worst thing you can call someone.
Henceforth, members of SDMB believed to be racists shall be treated as those believed to be jerks and those who start racist threads or make racist posts shall be treated as those who post jerkish threads or those who make jerkish posts.
Lest this start all over again, I’m going to close this one too since the question was asked and answered.
