Well, I have one more, a real outlier. I’ve always been fond of Kylie Minogue, but definitely not because of her music, but because she’'s just so damned cute. Heck, I’ve hated everything produced by Stock/Aitken/Waterman with a passion, and that’s where she came from musically. But then came “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head”, a song I should have detested, but strangely it grew on me with every time I heard it (the fact that I saw the video could have added to that, but it was definitely not crucial). Now it’s safely in my canon of guilty pleasures, and I’m willing to defend it any time as a great pop song.
Hanson’s my favorite band, so this post brightened my morning. ![]()
I was expecting the Beastie Boys’ number “Sabotage” to be another annoying whiny rap attempt like “Fight For Your Right…” or “Girls”. I had been completely unaware, at the time, of albums like Paul’s Boutique and the even better Check Your Head - totally fine efforts that eclipsed the IMO considerably weaker Licenced to Ill. And I was also ignorant of their nifty hardcore roots in their early EP’s from the Same Old Bullshit compilation. When “Sabotage” came out, I thought, ok, I can actually latch onto this, and then seeing the over-the-top video tied a nice ribbon on the song, which led me to checking out the album it was from - Ill Communication, and from there, worked backwards to (and much enjoying) the previously-mentioned stuff.
Oh, I thought of another one: Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas.
Well, she’d certainly been part of that SAW Hit Factory roster, but she’d then gone through something of a metamorphosis in the 90s, with things like Confide In Me and the duet with Nick Cave showing much more depth. Can’t Get You Out Of My Head certainly went stratospheric, but I think her return to the dance-pop throne was heralded by the earlier Spinning Around - which for me the much better song.
