Hughson High has the California State Boys 800m Champion

He’s the one in the bee shirt. That is not the standard uniform top for the varsity but he wanted to wear that one. (It came from the cross country season where the second 7 runners after the varsity were strong enough to compete well at the varsity level so they were known as the “B” varsity.) As you can see in the video, he tried to open a gap in the third 200 too fast and got reeled in. And his last name is Lighthall, not Lightfall as you hear in the video.

Good going, Joe!

As an aside, California is the only state to crown only one champion in each event. All other states have divisional state champion.

Something not right with your video link

Thanks, should be fixed.

I’m surprised his coach hasn’t got him out of the habit of looking back at the field. His head is all over the place.

Both of us have tried. Part of it is he’s freakin’ friendly, is on good terms with his opponents and wants to see them do well as much as he wants to win. He would often slow to urge his buddies to push harder to get themselves a shiny new PR.

He’s only faced real competition a couple of times at elite invitationals. He misjudged when to run for the finish as going that early had always opened a huge gap.

It’s a cool style of racing. You don’t often see races that are enjoyable to watch.

Nice run. Thanks for posting. Just noticed your user name, so assume this is one of your kids?

800M is an insane distance IMHO. You have to sprint the entire way, but your body feels spent after the first 1-200 meters and then it is sheer will power to go the distance. Was not for me.
