Every time the Worldcon is held in the UK British authors get a boost, but look at this: every single Best Novel nominee is a Brit! Never happened before.
Does this have any meaning before geography? I think it does. The British market for sf has always allowed for books that were more literary and less formulaic. Today the U.S. market is in a complete shambles. If you don’t write military space battles, vampire erotica, pastoral fantasy, or alternative history military battles there’s no room on racks overflowing with media tie-in books.
And the Hugos don’t even begin to cover the territory. Gwyneth Jones’ won the Philip K. Dick award for Life and people were surprised that Geoff Ryman didn’t win for Air. David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas is a finalist for the Nebula Award. M. John Harrison has been doing superb work. Neil Gaiman is a superstar alongside the likes of Terry Pratchett. And several names are coming up that haven’t achieved any attention on this side of the Atlantic.
I’ve been shoveling dirt onto the corpse of sf for some time now, but maybe the Brits will come revive it just like they did pop music in 1964.
“Winterfair’s Gifts” by Bujold is excellent. I love her and that story was the tops.
