I like to think I’m vaguely in touch with the music scene, but maybe not. MTV2 had a few shows on right before Thanksgiving called “22 Best Bands”, “22 Best Albums”, etc. Supposedly decided by viewer polling, though their website has nothing on the shows, at all, so no details.
What surprised me was that Linkin Park was in these lists at all. I thought they were just another one of the rap-metal bands that were dead now. Instead, IIRC, were listed as 5th best band of all time (aka since 1980). Right behind Guns ‘n’ Roses. Ahead of U2. Hybrid Theory was listed as top 10 Albums too.
You mean that you actually listened to what MTV had to say about music?
I have no idea why Linkin Park would be any where near the top 100, let alone the top 10 bands in the last 20 years. I fail to even see what they have done that’s been new.
actually, my only grievance with Linkin Park is that they stole their ‘unique’ sound from Stabbing Westward (I’m sure i’m in a minority here, but every time I hear one of their songs I think, ‘hey that’s a new Stabb- oh, no… that’s right, Stabbing Westward are all mellow now cos some young upstarts bought their souls on ebay!’)
really I do…
BUT…
I’m certain those young folks, when not attending their box-socials are quite enamoured with this new brand of pop-ular music and may even consider some of it ‘great’ (?).
Pop Culture sucks. It needs a real good slap in the face. And until I see that, any greatest bands/albums/songs/tv shows lists are to be treated as 100% BS.
Linkin park had at least a few good songs but overall they suck.
What really pissed me off was when I was reading a guitar magazine and it said something along the lines of the guitarist from linkin park being one of the most original and innovative guitarists ever. I mean come on all their sounds come from fucking samples and keyboards and every song sounds exactly the same with subtle differences. No talent I say
MTV has a sort of reputation amongst real musicians for sucking horribly with their rating system. They have absolutely no idea who the best guitarists are for example, as proved by their list of the Top 100… sad stuff if you actually know anything about playing.
