Have you watched any of the series exclusive to Hulu? Are any of them any good?
Misfits is incredibly good, especially the first two seasons.
The Thick of It is a hilarious take on British politics, with the same director and some of the same cast as** In The Loop**
Many of Hulu’s exclusives are TV shows from other countries that didn’t make the jump to the US, and there are some very good one.
I’ve also liked The Book Group (It’s nothing like it, but if you’re a fan of House, you’ll be delighted when you recognize the main character) and Green Wing (an absurdist medical comedy that has nothing to do with medicine).
I’ve also started watching Pramface, and it’s looking decent.
But definitely start with Misfits. There’s no easy way to describe it other than it’s about teenagers with super powers but who aren’t superheroes or villains. The story is unlike anything other portrayals, and the plot is filled with twists and surprises.
Green Wing–is that the one with a brief scene with John Oliver in the first episode? I watched that first episode and something seemed completely unwatchable about it. I can’t figure out what it was but it was like every scene was inviting me to stop watching. There were these weird time warp bits, and this music between scenes that seemed very grating to me. And somehow I didn’t get the idea that it was absurdist at all–it seemed very straightforward, occasional-chuckle-at-foibles type comedy. Should I have kept watching, given it more of a chance? Or if this stuff bothered me in the first episode is it likely I just wouldn’t watch the show?
It’s a critical darling and several of my friends adore it so I was disappointed not to like it.
I’ll have to look into Misfits and others suggested here. Thanks!
I will definitely watch In the Thick of It. I knew about it, just didn’t know it was on Hulu! Loved Veep so this is a must watch for me. (Wife hated veep so I will have to just catch episodes surreptitiously when she’s off doing something else…)
Agreed, I just caught up to episode 1 of series 3 last night. I’d also like to recommend The Supersizers…, The Librarians, and Rev. (series 3 just aired back in the UK).
Whites is pretty good.
*Am I the only one that has a problem with Hulu calling these shows “Hulu Originals” when in fact, most of them did not originate from Hulu?
It is one of my favorite comedies ever. The banter is simply amazing, the characters are bizarre, but amusing, and it’s just so damn funny.
I understand if you’re not a fan of how it is shot with the time dilation and some of the scenarios are just absurd, so I won’t say you have to stick with it if that grates on you too much. But it was one of the wittiest, funniest shows I’ve seen in the last decade and I will never listen to a word you say again if you don’t like it.
I wouldn’t exactly call “The Awesomes” good in any sense of the word. I did, however, enjoy it.
No, you’re not, and “Whites” is a good example of why it’s annoying. I quite enjoyed the series, but when I went to IMDb to see when I might expect more of this new “Hulu Original Series” I discovered that the show was long over and done with before I had even started watching it. I appreciate them providing content like this that I wouldn’t have found otherwise but would be even more appreciative if the advertising was less misleading.
I’m fond of Mongrels, which is a BBC puppet show for adults. First season especially is good.
Another Hulu “Original” from the Beeb is That Mitchell and Webb Look–excellent sketch comedy.
I did the exact same thing and started a thread about it. Link
Each time I see an ad for it, I keep toying with the idea of checking this one out because I like the cute girl.
The only one I’ve watched is The Booth at the End, but I was really impressed by it. Recommended.
Oh, if you’re not already watching, the last couple of seasons of QI are up on Hulu. (Fingers crossed they eventually bring them all over, ideally the XL versions.) British quiz show hosted by Stephen Fry; never fails to entertain or… well, fill one’s brain with useless trivia, mostly.
Showtime’s Homeland is a remake of Hatufim (Prisoners of War), an Israeli series. As much as I like Homeland, I like Hatufim even better. The stories are recognizably similar but very far from being identical. The dialogue, naturally, is in Hebrew with English subtitles.
I recommend both Deadbeat and The Booth at the End. (Deadbeat looks stupid but is actually pretty clever and funny, in its own cockeyed way.)
I just watched Endgame and thought it was fun. The premise requires a fairly generous suspension of disbelief, but the actual episodes were better thought out then your average mystery show and the characters are fun.
This is the one I was going to recommend. There are 2 seasons of it, last I looked, and I was really disappointed they didn’t do more.
