I’m looking for a multiplayer FPS game I can play with my nephews. We need four-player capacity, playable on xbox 360 or gamecube. The problem is that I am woefully inept, and so we are unable to get any kind of enjoyable game going (enjoyable for me that is; the little bastards see it as good sport "I got 14 kills! I got 17! Uncle Eric got -26!). We try to come up with artificial handicaps to even things out a bit, but never really work.
What I’d like is a game that has some sort of balancing system that can accomodate various skill levels via a difficulty setting or a damage percentage or something. (e.g. Player 1 will die if one bullet so much as grazes him, Player 2 needs to be hit in the face with a rocket launcher.)
Sadly, some dumbass (namely me) bought them Halo 2 last Christmas, which is what they were beating me on this afternoon and which has (they claim) no handicaps. I think I’d have a tough time getting them back on 1.
Fighting games are OK if they have “characters” that are stronger and weaker. Actually, most of the fighting games they like have cooperative modes, so that’s cool. And Sports games are OK, since they involve strategy. But they like the FPS most of all, and I simply cannot process fast-moving images like they can.
If you were on a pc LAN network, I’d send you a bunch of custom stuff I’ve collected and in some cases made for Unreal Tournament (the original), which includes some balancing mutators I’ve found. But since you’re not I won’t…
Can I recommend the TimeSplitters games? “Future Perfect” is the latest one, and allows for 4 players, character handicaps, and give you little nicknames at the end of a match depending on how you performed. Plus, it makes Bruce Lee sounds when you punch someone to death. Oh, and it has monkeys, zombies, robots, robot monkeys, and zombie monkeys,
Super Smash Bros. Melee for the GameCube has plenty of variety going for it and allows you to set up teams, so team up with the best of your nephews against the other two.
How about something like Star Wars: Battlefront? Or maybe Ghost Recon? Personally, I like games like Ghost Recon because you can suck at FPSes (like I do) and still have fun playing with others that are actually good since it’s cooperative multiplayer and a tactical shooter instead of being PVP and a twitch game.
Try something in the Rainbow Six family. It’s a FPS sim shooter, meaning that instead of charging into a room with both barrels blazing, you have to have patience. They aren’t quite one-shot-one-kill, but it’s close.
Just the thing to frustrate a hyperactive rugrat into leaving cover where you can easily pick them off.
This one has balancing factors? How, where, what? Little bastards beat the crap out of me with it.
I dunno; I think you may fail to grasp the enormity of my suckitude. I played the original Rainbow Six and I struggled against the computer. Against the kids, I often try the “sit in one spot and wait” tactic, and I still get waxed. Hell, the 16-year-old beats me in knife vs machine gun matchups.
Oh, sorry if I misunderstood. Yes, it does, and we’ve done that. But they have a preference for “kill each other” modes, and so that’s what I’m looking for.
