Hummingbird hatch watch!

Humminbird nest live stream… http://phoebeallens.com

Live stream of hummingbird nest… hatch watch in now through Thursday! As cool as eagle eggs, just on a much tinier scale.

Very cool. Now I have another thing to watch when I should be working!

One of the eggs hatched this morning. I barely caught a glimpse of the little thing down in the nest. One more egg to go.

This thread reminded me that I haven’t seen the hummer who used to lay her eggs in a nest she had built in our entryway lamp every year (photos in this thread). When I went out to look, I found that someone had stolen the nest.

Update: I went out today, and she’s building a new one in the same spot!

Bird is sitting on it right now. I haven’t been watching and don’t know how often it’s there.

ETA: OOo it flew away, and look, babies!

Yay!

I’ve been watching this at work today and I swear they’ve grown since this morning.

One just wiggled its bum over the edge and did a poo. Amazing!

At the moment there’s just a pulsating, hairy thingy down in the nest. I’ll keep watching to see if it’ll resolve itself into a chick.

Oooh, hummers!

My favourite birdie. We have them here year-round now, and I have two feeders. Making nectar in the chill of December. Making sure the feeders come inside overnight to stay thawed in January. Once you start with a feeder, they expect you to keep it up… and they are not shy about letting me know when it’s time for a refill.

Can I link to the “snoring hummingbird?

Hoooooly Xochiquetzal’s mother-effing panties, I just died of cute. It’s a hummingbird. That appears to be. SNORING.

They seem to be eating very well. Most of the time when I see mom return to the nest, they don’t bother even lifting their heads and has to poke at them like “Hey, hey here’s food, open up!”

Bad news, the hummingbird nest was attacked by a large bird yesterday evening. Mama survived and is re-building the nest. I’m not sure what exactly happened to the babies but I’m sure it wasn’t good.
