Humorous ethnic restaurant names

Northeast corner, across the street from Vons.

And if you’re talking L.A. cuisine, you gotta mention Pinks, the hot dog stand at La Brea and 3rd.

Nice to meetcha Nightsky, I figured someone would know. After all, there are only two Murder Burgers in the entire world.

Oh yes, have a Guadalajara Dog at Pinks! And don’t forget The Apple Pan! he said to further the L.A.-area cuisine hijack.

That spelling is right, Ms Macphisto.

If you go east a bit past there, you’ll pass the Tin Lung Restaurant, which always makes me think of a budget answer to an iron lung.

Yeah, that’s how you spell it. I was going to post about that myself as soon as I saw this thread.

Last January, my friends and I were driving around looking for Pho restaurants that were actually open after 11 PM. (it took us 45 minutes to do so [a 24-hour place on Broadway], but I digress) We passed that very restaurant, and my friend Nathan siad he couldn’t help laughing every time he said “Pho Bich Nga.” (because of what it sounded like… not that he’s racist or misogynistic in any way)
Here’s another humorous / weird ethnic restaurant name, which I’ve posted about before: Insomnia Karaoke Restaurant.

It’s near my apartment, and looks to be one of those hilariously mistranslated names. (very weird name, at any rate)

F_X

Bich Nga would be a girl’s name. Bich* is a quite common female name in Vietnamese. Yes, it’s ever so slightly pronouced like “bitch”, but the “ich” is more German sounding, but even then not quite. I know the sound, but can’t do it.

Not to go further with this Mo Betta Meaty Meat Burger hijack, but how good are they? I live in Santa Barbara, so they’re not worth a hundred mile drive, but I go to Orange County fairly often, and it’s only five miles off of 405, and that could be worth it…is it? And how many more pronouns could I have possibly used in that last sentence?

I think both words are acceptable in a restaurant name. Kitsune just means “fox.” In fact Kitsune-soba (soba noodles served in hot soup with fried bean curd) is a very common dish.

The word Oni refers to various monsters and ghosts of Japanese folklore, but most commonly a red-skinned giant with horns wielding a metal club. But nobody actually believes those stories, so it’s perfectly acceptable to use the term as part of a product name. You can see an oni senbei (rice crackers) in the middle of this page, complete with a drawing of an oni on the label.

There is the Bac Loo Vietnamese in Marrickville.

Agback - there isn’t a ‘Thai Foid’ yet is there?

Damn - sorry I meant TheLoadedDog, not Agback - bloody Aussies all sound the same.

Actually, the restaurant names I know are pretty obviously intended to be the way they are.

There’s Ichi-Bun Japanese restaurant in Arlington, Mass. A pretty clever bilingual pun.

And there’s the Wok Inn in Boston on Boylston Street.

In Nashville, there is a “Fat Mo’s Hamburgers”, one of the truly great burgers in history.

Full name–“Fat Mohammad’s”.

I don’t personally know of this restaurant but i received a picture of it on an email full of stupid restaurant names. This one is by far the best!

A Japanese restaurant called fuk mi! What will they think of next?

Seaside CA: Senor Taco. It wasn’t funny until we heard a radio add, and a female friend said “You haven’t seen MY taco, jackass!”

Also Seaside CA: The Ichi Riki. There’s always a crowd, but I can’t bring myself to go inside.

Tallahassee, FL: Swankie Frankies (Hot Dog place)

Also in Tally: Not quite an ethnic restaurant, but seeing Hooters right next to Woody’s BBQ, a few doors down from Condomology, and in front of the old NorthWOOD Mall, which now holds the state dept. of Children and Families… well, lets just stop that one right there.

There was a Chinese carry-out place on 14th St, NW in DC a few years ago called Good Ho. Don’t know if it’s still there or not…

Definitely worth a five-minute drive to try one (and hey, it gets you off the 405 for a little while!). It’s one of my top three burgers in L.A.; they’re constantly changing order but they’re always the top 3. And you’ll be not very far away from me, so call out my name in case I’m driving by. Oh, and I think you could have used at least 3 more pronouns in that sentence.

Hrm, I’m hijacking this thread too much. Must add some relevant content… did I mention I used to live near a Vietnamese place called “My Dung”? Yeah, I know I did, but that’s all I’ve got.

Dude, you are so woefully underinformed it’s not even funny.

My current prized possession is a hard-to-find Ethiopian cookbook. Ethiopian cuisine is totally delicious and completely unlike anything you’ve ever had before. I suggest you get on over to Campbell, CA and eat there pronto!

To further the L.A. cuisine hijack and the Ethiopian food hijack…all in one post:

There’s a great Ethiopian place called Nyala located on Fairfax and Olympic.

Damn good stuff…

Finally a topic worth registering for!

In East London, South Africa, there is (or at least was ten years ago) a Chinese take-out place called Fook Hing’s

Here in Salt Lake City, there is a place called Long-Life Veggie House. No particular connotation there, but I always thought it was funny.

Wouldn’t it be closer to take the 10 east, then go north on Fairfax instead? Getting off the 405 at Pico and schlepping eastward to Fairfax seems like an inefficient way of doing things.
