HurricaneDitka openly admits he prefers SDMB for its troll-friendly nature

Seriously, you don’t think that becomes obvious over the course of a discussion, so we must have Official Badges O’Shame™?

Sounds pretty damn juvenile.

It would probably have been a fave idea back in third grade, to designate the unpopular kids. :dubious:

I mean sure, you can pretend there are no real-life examples of sites with reputation features that help the quality immensely, but you’re wrong.

Are you people really not aware of the state of the art circa 5 years ago and how it’s functioning in the wild?

And again: You could easily test what you believe and report back on the results. But nobody really wants to know so nobody is really going to do a test.

Gonna Black Mirror this site up, boys! If you fall below 3… well, just don’t fall below 3, that’s what I’m sayin’.

Honest question - how does it actually work out in real-life situations? I don’t internet good and don’t see many other sites, so what happens? Is it like an automatically implemented ignore function once enough people decide he sucks enough? Do posts get moved out of order to bring the popular posts to the top? Does an icon of a butt appear next to his name? What?

It’s a good question that I’ll also be interested in. I think the OP assumes we all know this stuff, but, frankly, I don’t really go on many other sites. Oh, I have a Reddit account (as well as one on Giraffes board and a few others), but I haven’t used them in years and hardly ever went on them in the past. I know on YouTube that if you get enough dislikes then the automatic AI can kick in and either de-list you or even remove the video or block it. This goes for negative comments too. No idea how Reddit does it. But I bet there is some sort of real world effect from getting a lot of dislikes…which one would get if one held a minority and unpopular view point. But hopefully the OP will answer…like I said, I’m interested as well.

The comment is hidden with a note saying the comment is hidden due to having a low score. You can view it by clicking on it. You can also see the negative score before un-hiding it.

I’m not someone who goes on Reddit often, but I do on occasion. I’ll reluctantly admit that generally if a comment is hidden, when I view it I understand why it was down-voted so much. Generally a post has to be pretty bad/offensive to get a low enough score to be hidden.

I say that reluctantly because I still think it’s not a good idea here (in principle) even though it seems to work just fine over there.

Wow,
Whoda thought that the pagedown key a high end innovation in computers?

DON’T READ THIS, IT’S IN ALL CAPS! YOU’RE LUCKY I DIDN’T UNDERLINE IT!

So auto-ignore on a post-by-post basis, then. Thanks for the info.

I’m a curious sort, so I’d probably look behind the curtain anyway.

I’m gonna vote for not having votes on posts. It’s a petty and trivial system.

If the posts are that bad, refute them or ask the moderators to remove them. If they’re not, and/or you can’t, then either put the poster on Ignore or just scroll on by.

Seems like an awful idea for a message board like this one. I mean, we pretend to be ‘fighting ignorance’ and promoting reasoned (or entertaining) discussion, and some take pride in identifying and dealing with trolls, bots, tinfoil hatters, proselytizers, etc.

A downrating system that hides or spoiler boxes posts seems like it would promote the worst group behaviors instead of protecting the best behaviors.

The little time I spent on Reddit was not such that I felt like going back … the threaded nature of it puts me off. And not sure how spending hours there could demonstrate that there are views expressed that I am not seeing?

In any case it has little to do with the Pitting here. Even if **HD[/B’s (and others’) impression that the popularity downvoting system does not actually make unpopular views less heard, expressing a belief that it would and that therefore his unpopular views would be less likely heard by those who disagree with him ≠ an admission of trolling here.

Really a fail of a Pit. And with an easy target.

I haven’t been keeping count, but so far the unofficial tally suggests that we’re strongly against turning the SDMB into Reddit, which I don’t recall anyone proposing in the first place. Stay tuned for post-election coverage!

I do think we should have basic “likes”, but no downvoting. (Like Twitter.)

Yeah, I hate that structure. I just find it really, really annoying for some reason. But then I dislike just about everything about Reddit except its enormous breadth. I read it from time to time, but its default design frustrates me to no end. Fucking nested comments in particular are an abomination, but so is the default lack of linearity. I don’t want to see popular comments first thank-you-very-much.

You don’t fool me! I can read between the lines! Soon, all will be forced to Reddit by Trump’s Supreme Court!

First a State of Emergency needs to be declared on SDMB.

Is he giving you a bad day, big fella? Please don’t murder your family or molest any children, even if he is.

I kind of like the idea of upvoting but not downvoting, as long as it doesn’t affect the visibility of comments at all. At worst it would add a pointless feature; not sure what the negatives would be. Perhaps it could be a feature that is turned on or off by the OP, and thus posters are free to start threads without any voting at all if they wish.

Maybe the discussion of the SDMB being more Reddit-like should be moved to ATMB? This thread was supposed tp be Pitting HD for having admitted his trolling. Which he did not admit, even if he does troll.

You know, you never have been very likable, but you used to manage to be funny pretty often. About a year or so ago, you turned into a shit-eating jackal who growls and snaps around every turd-pile it can find on two boards. You were more fun when you were just a guy trying to relive his high school days as class clown.
