Hydra vs. Cobra

I can’t say. I’ve never driven a Hydra.

You live, you Lernean.

The whole point of HYDRA is you can cut off the head!

And you get some bitchin’ goat leggings!

If it’s the IDW comic book Cobra, then Cobra in a walk.

HYDRA is more subversive, but Cobra is very, very military.

Cobra has Artillery, Armor, Airpower, & lots of specialist Infantry.

Hydra has Infantry, a few Mad Scientists (which Cobra also has), and that’s pretty much it.

HYDRA didn’t fall apart because the leader dies. There was also the fact that Cap blew up everything in sight around the leader and killed everyone in the area. But HYDRA survived. Red Skull died but HYDRA was still around for Sundance to almost take over the world. Sundance dies and Baron Strucker is unconcerned.

With what, independent film?

With grainy cell phone photos of Natalie Portman or Penelope Cruz walking in the opposite direction. Those are the main product. Independent film is more of a side line for Sundance these days.

We haven’t been watching the same movies.

Because of AIM, Hydra wins hands down.

Is HYDRA still around in the new movie? I haven’t seen it. They seemed pretty dead at the end of the first one, though.

Without spoiling anything, they are a big deal in the new movie.

Cut off one head…

Not just “yes”, but “fuck, yes”.

However:

It isn’t exactly the same Hydra, either. basically, some of the survivors from the first managed to get together and restart it, but the organizations differ radically. Its goals don’t seem to be the same either. The original Hydra was entirely a cult of personality around Red Skull. The new one has a very different ideology in as far as we’re shown. It’s also a lot looser with far less internal loyalty if the stinger to Cap 2 is included - the old Hydra would never have sold each other out for personal gain because the individuals weren’t supposed to have any personal gain. Further, it’s unclear if Armin Zola was even a real member before. Certainly the Skull liked/needed him but he doesn’t appear to have given power and his trustworthiness was suspect, but he appears to have been intimately concerned with the reborn Hydra.

I dunno. Their goals seem to be pretty much the same, except instead of “Rule the world in the name of the Red Skull,” it’s “Rule the world in the name of Alexander Pierce.” Sure, Pierce talks about how he’s doing this for peace and prosperity and to make the world a better place. But he’s the leader of Hydra, and by definition, a lying sociopath. I wouldn’t take his description of his motives at face value.

Well rule-the-world is a pretty common motive in comic books. I don’t think Pierce was lying, except to himself. But, for example, I’m pretty sure Baron Strucker doesn’t care about anything but power. Specifically, his power. And God only knows what Zola really wants.
