I’m getting married in New Jersey this August, and my fiance and I are hyphenating our surnames. The New Jersey marriage license doesn’t have a line for either spouse to indicate what name they will be using after the wedding.
Should we spend the time and money to change my fiance’s name before the wedding, or can we use the marriage license with both of our original names to get new social security numbers and driver’s licenses with our new hyphenated name? The official social security and dmv pages just say to bring a marriage license as proof of a name change, but those were probably written for women who take their husband’s name. I’d really appreciate advice on this, because we don’t want to fill out the marriage license incorrectly and miss out on the free name change. Thanks
