Hypothetical: Marijuana is completely legal and you're allowed to grow your own. Do you?

It was legalized here in California in 2016. The dispensary I went to sold healthy-looking clones, so I thought I’d try my hand growing.

I planted three plants in plain old whiskey barrels in my backyard and treated them like tomato plants - lots of sun, water and quality organic fertilizer. They grew beautifully with no problems. This is northern California, after all. I’m not quite in the emerald triangle, but close enough that the plants thrived.

I harvested the plants and hung them to dry over the tub in an unused bathroom in our house, then dry-trimmed them and put up the flowers in quart-sized glass jars. I got about an ounce off each plant, which is plenty for our two (old) person household. In fact, we’re still working on the 2020 crop, and I didn’t have to grow any in 2021. I have no way of knowing the THC percentage, but it’s plenty strong enough for us.

Yes, it smells when it’s in flower. I like the smell, but I was worried that you could smell it from the street and that some passerby would climb our fence and make off with my plants just before harvest. Luckily no one did.

I wouldn’t grow weed; I’ve heard its drawbacks often usually outweigh the benefits.

But I definitely might try growing some shrooms, San Pedro, peyote, if that were legal.

It is legal here, and I don’t grow any, so I guess the answer is no.

To be fair, I don’t grow any plants because I have a black thumb. I’ve murdered too many Bonsai trees. So I just don’t have the interest in growing anything, let alone marijuana, which I also don’t use so I cannot see any real benefit for me to grow any.

Thank you.

I’m not sure if growing will ever be legal in my state. We do have legal medical pot.

Interesting username/post combo.

I will point out that bonsai aren’t easy, low-maintenance plants. They have specific and rather weird requirements because of how shallow their root system has to stay.

You know, I think I would be interested in giving it a try. And I might even stay interested for … days? A couple of weeks? I have a hard time imagining that I would actually see things through.

It shouldn’t be a big hassle if one was to grow a few plants in a sunny spot outdoors. There’s a reason it’s called “weed”.

It’s highly doubtful I’d use any of my valuable gardening space for pot growing were it to become legal in my state. There are other priorities, and too much risk of attracting miscreants.*

*including possums, who are wandering around in a daze as it is.

Legal weed in WA is so inexpensive, I doubt many would bother growing it to try and undercut legal weed. Shops have ounces on sale for $30-50. Not sure on the quality, but the quantity is there.

Thankfully I was wrong. Went to my first dispensary in MO. The prices are low enough it has wiped out the black market here in KS.

For legal weed fans, I think Missouri is an important “get.” Seven of the eight states bordering it don’t have legal recreational sales yet and Missouri, with its low pricing and fairly widespread availability, can infect them all with the pleasures of sin.

When will WI figure that out? Not in my lifetime.

Bud Light is the only socially acceptable drug around here. Around here, a cannabis user is the same as being a Democrat. It will get you shot if it gets known in certain circles.

It was pretty amazing how quickly Missouri got its recreational legal structure in place. Of course, the state did seem to have a really high number of medical dispensaries already in place and seemed to mostly just turn those loose to sell recreationally.

Contrast that with my home Maryland, whose voters also approved recreational sales in November (66% approval to Missouri’s 53%) but which won’t be issuing the first tentative retail licenses until perhaps July 1.

I think I read that New York is also proceeding very deliberately in its licensing of retail weed stores.

Yeah. Basically, in NY it’s been legal to possess the stuff (within certain quantities) for, I think it’s a couple of years now; but there’s no legal way to buy it.

I’d grow it, probably, just for the heck of it. Would I SMOKE it? Um…not sure.

Technically it is still illegal in Hawai’i, but it is decriminalized and everyone assumes it is only a matter of time until it is legalized, since we got a new governor (the old one vetoed any attempt at legalization).

So they’ve recently started selling seeds at road-side stands. This is Hawai’i, you can garden year-round if you want, and I have plenty of places where I could plant it. I’m tempted, but never tempted enough, to stop and buy some seeds, and one of these days I probably will.

But it’s been years since I smoked (with one “meh” exception a few years back) and I would be quite cautious about taking it up again. So my guess is, I’d plant the seeds for fun, and if they were susceptible to pests and diseases, well, that would be the end of that. If the plants thrived, I’d probably get around to drying and smoking some eventually. Maybe. Or maybe not.

Legal here in RI. I can just go to the dispensary to get what I want. I think it would be better to just allow people to grow their own instead of legalizing the sale of it, but the lure of profits and taxes was too strong. There are some indications the legal suppliers will soon disappear because the supply is increasing and demand isn’t as great as expected. It’s also an expensive business to run under many of the states requirements. So perhaps the situation will change soon,

I just checked the price in Quincy, IL. It has dropped from $595/oz 1 year ago to $250ish. Same as MO.

Legal here in Missouri. Officially, you need a cultivation license. Unofficially, fuck that. Regardless, I tried to grow my own and got absolutely nowhere. I wound up giving away about $150 worth of grow tent and grow lights to a friend who’s going to use it to grown kitchen herbs (I’m not kidding).

I suggest new growers find a mentor. I’ve acted as one for several friends, it really makes a difference.

Too late now, and I tried to get a friend who grows it to mentor me but he was like “figure it out.” No big deal, it’s pretty cheap (comparatively) in Missouri so it’s all good.

And all of the “gray market” stores in DC are shitting their pants about that, and they’re probably right to be. Why would anyone go into DC to get questionably legal weed if you can get legit legal weed in Maryland?
