Hysterical Blindness

Anyone else see this movie on HBO? I had heard all these good reviews about it, how it was so good and all. I have to say that the movie sucked. Not because the acting or characters were bad, but the story was bad.
I watched the movie and found myself slipping into a steady coma of depression; these women were crazy (IMO). Also their was a seedy aspect of the movie that left a foul taste in my mouth.

Anyone else see it?

I haven’t seen it yet, but DMC and I are planning on watching it tonight, so I’ll let you know what I think about it then. You comments disappoint me. We were both really looking forward to it. But then I love crazy women, being one in a long line of them.

If it’s on tonight, I may try to watch it, too. I admit, I’m going into it expecting to be disappointed, though. There hasn’t been an HBO film I’ve liked in a while.

On a side note, has anyone caught Witness Protection? It was an HBO film with Forest Whitaker and Tom Sizemore. It was enlightening and not half-bad.

My wife and I watched on Sunday and loved it! The screenplay was outstanding. The acting was fantastic. Umma Thurman gave truly a breathtaking performance as the protaganist. I am constantly amazed by her. How can someone be so beautiful and so talented at the same time?

Watching the Juliette Lewis character was downright scary for me. I “hooked up” with a Jersey Girl in Ocean City, MD back in the late '80s who looked and acted just like her! To a tee! [shudder]

A solid 7.5 out of 10 rating.

I’m not saying that it was a badly done movie, quite the opposite actually. The story was just plain depressing and the characters lives were sad.
That being said, both the actresses gave great performances.
I just felt dirty after watching it; I also was tempted to scream at the TV when one of the ladies was SO “niave” with a man (I don’t think that gives too much away).

I thought it was very well done. I’ve known other women like that and I confess – sometimes I’ve been known to act like that. I guess you can take the girl out of the trailer park… Some behaviors are harder than others to overcome. I think the main idea was that these women were always looking for something else to make them happy, so that happiness depended on how others interacted with them. Just a trailer trash girl’s search for love…

That said, it was damn depressing.

I’ve been watching ESPN all day. Instead of watching Baseball Tonight for the 4th time, I just switched to HBO and it’s on. I’ll watch it now. I wonder how much I missed.

Well, I did watch it last night. I’m not sure I got the depressing part. No, I mean the majority of the movie was depressing. But after Uma’s character reconciled with her mother (crawling into bed) and then spent time watching Juliette’s daughter do her “routine,” I felt a lightness and airiness.

The movie reminded me very much of a more overt Gas, Food and Lodging (which is one of my favorite films). I thought Gena Rowlands was spectacular.

I also, liked the Hysterical illness theme, but then I spend a lot of time looking into things like that.

Oh, and one more thing. Best use of Cyndi Lauper in a movie ever.

I watched the movie last night and I have a question. Was this movie set in the 80s? I missed the very beginning so I’m not sure.

I really think this role showed of what Uma Thurman is capable. Her character, however, was so hard to watch. Are there really people like her out there? How frightening!

I like Juliette Lewis, but her character wasn’t out of the ordinary for her. In other words, it wasn’t a big stretch for her, in my opinion. She’s very good at playing child-like women.

I don’t know much about Gena Rowlands except that she was wonderful in this movie. Her character’s reaction to her beau’s death was so well acted. I loved the way she thoughtlessly apologized for Michael’s loss, just barely staying composed.

All in all, this glimpse into these losers’ (lets face it, that’s what they were) lives wasn’t that bad.

Juanita: The clothes. The hair. The music. The cars…Yes, the movie was set in the 1980s.

Thanks, Fing. In that case, they were just regular losers, not huge losers like I kept thinking they were

I thought it was great, and Uma blew me away. She actually made me believe that a woman as beautiful as she is could actually be that pathetic.

Gena Rowlands is always spectacular, and either she is aging fantastically well (she’s 72), or she’s got a really, really talented surgeon.
