I adopted a kitty today.

Name him Sam.

Person of a 14yo pound kitteh here. Let me add my voice to the chorus with no clue about why people don’t want a grownup feline.

Maybe something in them is looking for a toy and not a companion. If so, they r dum, and should go buy a cageful of squeaky pocket-size rodents.

Kitty adjusted well the first day, didn’t act scared or intimidated by the house, played with toys and acted like a cuddlemonster. Later in the evening started sneezing, and didn’t really eat much, but I wasn’t too worried. He used his little box twice, like a good kitty.

Today when I got home from work he seemed to have stopped sneezing, but tonight when I got up and checked on him, he has full-on eye gunk and really watery eyes and is audibly sniffling. He still hasn’t eaten much (I think he took a few bites and some water, and I did manage to hand-feed him a bit and he didn’t spit it out), but I’m taking him to the vet tomorrow, just to make sure he’s okay. I’m guessing he’s picking at his food if he’s not feeling well, but he’s been REALLY lethargic today and I’d rather get him checked than not. He also just had vaccinations and was neutered, de-mited and microchipped, so I’m hoping he just is having some recovery time. I know I’d be tired.

We experienced something similar with my sister’s cat, and he’s a lovable big Siamese brat and a half now, so I’m trying not to be too worried.

Leah,

I really like the name “Pumpkin” or “Punkin”

Q

Pumpkin is the name the shelter gave him, so we may keep it

Shelter kitties frequently get upper respiratory infections which clear up fine with medication. I foster shelter kittens sometimes and have had several batches of sneezy, teary furballs. You have to encourage them to eat though-when the poor things get clogged up and can’t smell their food they don’t want to eat much.
He looks like a real sweetie.

Yeah, I’m not so worried about the cold as the not eating. I’ll hand-feed him today and see if he perks up a bit.

He might not be able to smell his food. Try some stinky canned food. Also, when my kitties have gunky eyes, I wet a tissue and clean their faces, eyes and nose. They seem to feel better afterwards.

I tried really stinky liver-flavored kitty food. I rubbed a bit on his nose. I was able to get a tiny bit into his mouth with my hand, but he won’t eat it by choice. I even tried some tuna water, because that’s about as smelly as stuff gets.

He went to the vet this morning and the respiratory infection hadn’t spread to his lungs, but he was running a fever and got some antibiotic liquid for me to give him, and an injection. He looks like he’s feeling MUCH better tonight, but still not eating. He isn’t ACTING sick, and is still using the litter box, so I’m kind of more stumped than worried, but if he doesn’t eat in the next day or two I’ll see if they want me to bring him back in. They weren’t worried about dehydration yet, so that’s good at least.

He had terrible eye gunk yesterday, which I wiped with a warm cloth, but it seems to have mostly cleared up today. He was wheezing and sniffling last night, and tonight he was bright-eyed and mewing clearly.

He’s very cuddly, and cried when I had to put him down to get ready for work. He curls up on our laps and feet, and the only time he jumps up on anything is when he wants attention (IE, we’re sitting at the table doing something and he wants to be held).

The vet said he was extremely well-behaved, also. He did have dead fleas on him that indicated he’d been treated, but no live ones, and he doesn’t scratch at all. He needs a bath (he’s not filthy, but I want to wash off the dead fleas, and he smells a little ‘stale’), but I didn’t want to get him wet while he was sick, so I’m waiting a couple of days.

I will try to take some pictures tomorrow if I can get some batteries in the camera, now that he’s feeling better.

You should name her skeelers. That’s a Dutch word meaning “inline skates.” Come here little skeelers.

BTW have her baby teeth fallen out? If not wait for it, they fall out at five months. Sometimes the teeth come out together and it looks like kitty lost a bridge. I saw one kitty who’s permenent teeth came in and her milk teeth hadn’t fallen out and for about 2 weeks she had a pretty cool “shark” look to her

Really?!

Damn, I’m good!

I managed to snag a picture this morning of the little guy. He’s looking much better, though he did have a sore nose.

Kitty lounging on my roommate.

My little (okay, not little) orange guy had the sad eye-drippies when I got him from the shelter too. They gave me antibiotics to give him, but he did get worse before he got better. I remember we came home after we saw Pan’s Labrynth, whenever that came out, and we’d been treating him for a couple days but he looked just awful and I was so scared for him, but when I went to take him to the vet in the morning he was all better. For what that’s worth.

What beautiful eyes he has! I think orange kittehs rock, I’ve had two and they are wonderful, loyal friends.
