Everyone wants kittens, but we picked an older kitty, 5+ months old that needed a home from the humane society. Neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, to boot.
He’s the sweetest ball of orange fluff. Very sweet and clingy, and not in the least bit squirmy. He loves to be picked up and snuggled, and he’s so lightweight – he’s nothing but fur (even though he’s short-haired).
Poor thing still needs a name, but we’re stumped yet.
Requisite pictures included, unfortunately taken with my icky camera phone. The usual digicam is all out of battery.
As a volunteer at my local humane society/animal shelter here in Paulding County, Georgia, i just wanted to say thanks for taking this little one into your heart and home.
We have a nationwide overcrowding problem in our shelters, and due to the economy (read foreclosures), more are turned in every day.
Unfortunately my shelter is a kill-shelter, and although we try our best to adopt out both our dogs and cats, we just can’t find homes for all of them.
This is why I and my other volunteers are advocates for Spay, Neuter and Adopt.
Thanks also for choosing an older cat. Many older animals (much older than 5 months) are forced to live out the rest of their days never again knowing the love of a human, and that’s just sad, because they have no idea why their human has suddenly deserted them.
We do our best, but we just cannot help them all, so thank you Leah M and anyone else who can help us help them.
I think he chose me more than I chose him, but either way it works
I feel bad for the older cats no one wants, because they’ve outgrown the ‘awwwww baby!’ stage. There was a beautiful calico female, I think 1+ year old that NOBODY seemed to want (they had brought her to adoption events twice already, I think the person said), and if I’d had the means for two cats, I would have taken her as well. She was adorable and very vocal (I love vocal kitties), but most people just steered clear, since she wasn’t a kitten. It’s sad. The kitten there with similar coloring and markings got tons of attention.
He looks like an Apollo to me. I have no idea why.
We adopted two adult cats from our humane society a few years ago. We couldn’t have asked for better kitties! (Don’t let Phoebe know I said that, though)
See, this is something I really don’t understand. I would faaaar rather get an older kitty that already has a developed personality, than risk getting a cute kitten that grew into a hell monster. I mean, how long does the ‘awwwwww baby’ stage really last? Are these the same people who take their cats to the vet to be put down because they can’t be bothered any more?
We lost our 17 year old cat recently that was picked as a cute (feisty!) kitten. He was never a particularly affectionate cat, and it taught me a valuable lesson about how I would go about acquiring another cat, if and when we do. I’ll be at the shelter, ignoring the kittens
Congrats on your new kitty Leah. What a cutie!
Edited to add: PS He looks like an Edward to me. Eddie for short.
Both of my wonderful kitties were adult rescue kitties, and I have never regretted it. They came into the house and settled right in, even getting along with the dogs right from the first. They are SUPER cuddly and affectionate-Charlie even gives kisses like a dog.
May you and the yet-unnamed young 'un have a long and glorious life together!
The local shelter here has so many kitties they’re waiving adoption fees this month. I’m off work Tuesday and am going to go down and see if anybody wants to come home with me. It has to be somebody older and mellow, I have a small house, but I want a kitty!
I am enabler, but I say go back and get the little calico lady. Your new boy needs company. And as someone who accidently ended up with three cats, I can honestly say that one more isn’t really any more expensive to keep around.
I would have considered it but the kitties in question are described as rather highly energetic. I live in a studio cabin, I don’t have much room, and I’d like to at least decrease my chances of a kitty deciding to bounce on my head at 3 AM.
Besides, I’m way the heck off any beaten path. Getting anything or anybody here can be a bit of a challenge.
