I almost got fired today because I went to donate blood

To my boss: FUCK YOU!
I should have asked permission? I went to donate at 7:30 am
last I checked, I didn’t have to be at work until 8:30.
I didn’t think it would take more than an hour to and hour and a half, considering the time. I called you. Twice.
And yes, when I got back to the office it was 11:50.
SO FUCKING WHAT?
I would understand your fury if I had done this on say, Monday the 10th, but it seems that some fuckwatts, decided to crash 4 plane full of innocent people into buildings, that killed and injured a horrifying number of people.
Blood is good. They needed blood.
Why didn’t I leave at 10? Because I just spent2 1/2 hours waiting, I didn’t think it would be much longer. I was going to leave at 11am, but they called my name. After 3 1/2 hours, I was not leaving. You say NYC and DC have enough, how the fuck would you know? And what makes you think this is over?

I just hope that if you or someone you love, ever needs blood, the bank doesn’t say “sorry, we’re out, apparently
no one was allowed take any time off work!”

What a fucker. It would suck if someone slipped some ExLax in his coffee, huh?

I can empathize with the long wait, too - my friend and I spent our entire afternoon yesterday (from 2:30 to 6:30) waiting in line at the blood bank with a three-year-old and four-year-old. We had a blast! The kids got tired and cranky, so we let them have sodas and Cheetos from the hospital vending machine (which they are NEVER allowed). That worked for about three minutes. Then they were tired, cranky, sticky, and covered in cheese-flavored dust. It was a minor inconvenience, but what the hell else could you do at a time like this? Some people were walking off, complaining it was taking too long and they had other things to do. Like you, I hope others don’t feel that way if they ever find themselves in need.

Kudos to you for doing your part.

The thing is, NO ONE at the blood donation center, including myself complained about the wait.
We didn’t mind and we all seemed to think this was the ‘very least’ we could do to help
boss did not agree

Years ago, when a BloodMobile came to our office, the big boss (boss’s boss’s boss) gave out a special account number to charge the 1-2 hours it’d probably take any of us who wanted to donate. So we didn’t waste customers’ time and money, we donated, and we got our full paychecks.

Every business should be run this way.

Well, yes, I think you should have asked permission, or at the very least, when you realized it was going to be such a long wait, come back to the blood bank after work, or make arrangements with your boss. I agree it sounds like your boss is a prick. If I were in management, I think I would offer everyone a morning or afternoon off in a way that would keep the office staffed (provided they brought back proof that they donated, not went home to watch TV! )

What you did was a good thing, your heart is in the right place, and you are to be admired for helping, but I think you didn’t exercise the BEST judgement in the world. But you can’t just go taking off the morning with no notice then come to work 3 HOURS LATER without making arrangements at work then expect your boss to be 100% happy with you. Maybe that makes me a bad guy I guess.

I’ve been considering giving blood, but last time I had blood drawn I couldn’t even keep my soda in my hand, and I am afraid of having to drive after giving blood.

Erek

Hey, I told my staff they could be gone for a while if they went to give blood. It’s the only right thing to do.

If the building would have a bloodmobile every 2 months I’d give them permission then, as well. It ain’t only in disasters that blood runs short.

What tha—
Miss Creant, we work for the same guy???
What say you and I go to lunch sometime?
[sub]My boss: “Are we dead? No? Then let’s go to work…”[/sub]

I can understand him getting pissed if this was a REGULAR thing, but hell, no business anywhere in North America is performing as usual right now. MORALE IS LOW, CAPTAIN. DOES IT TAKE A FUCKING SURVEY TO TELL YOU THAT? If your employees giving blood makes them feel better, somewhat, then productivity will go up! CONCEPT!

He needs his ass loosened somewhat. Whatsay we find a big ex-con named Bubba to help him out with that?

Why the fuck would I have asked permission? I thought I was doing this on MY OWN TIME. If you re read to OP, it says I called her (BTW he’s a her) TWICE!!!
Yeah, it was a long wait, be a whole lot fucking shorter than for the people who have lost family and friends.
I’m all the way the fuck out in Chicago and feel usless. I wanted to do something to help. I hate her making me feel that what I did was such a horrible thing.
Oh well Miss Creant got to go give blood so can I? Maybe instead of being a bitch you could have told them, hey
she started this on her own time and now she’s stuck there. Or maybe even had said, god forbid, YES, by all means, go give blood.
instead she’s just a raggedy ass’d bitch and right now I need Jarbabyj to come up with a good name for her. No one cusses like Jbabe!

I donated blood last month. My employer was having a blood drive, and they gave me the entire afternoon off with pay to give blood. I tried to donate again, after all this crap happened, but the Red Cross would’nt allow it. They said it was too soon.

Well, up until 8:30 it was on your own time, I’m assuming that was when your boss and co-workers were counting on you to come in and do your job.

It’s good that you called in, but I think there’s a big difference between “My car is broken down, I’m working on it, I’m trying to get it fixed and will be in asap, I physically cannot make it to work” and “Oh I just decided to give blood but it’s going to be a few hours, I could come into work now but I won’t so you know, f- you…”.

Like I said your heart is in the right place, and if I were your manager I’d make sure everyone who wanted to could help. Your good heart overruled your good judgement, that is all.
