I am a crafting goddess, oh yes I am. Inspired by some rag rugs my mom has, made by my great-Grandmother Bessie yet still in use today, I decided to learn how to make crocheted rag rugs. I bought this book, and following the instructions just completed the “starter” project – a hot pad made of crocheted fabric strip. It looks pretty nifty, if I do say so myself (I only had to rip out the work once to get it right) and I’m feeling certain I can have at least one rug completed in time for Christmas. Everyone I know is giving me their old sheets, curtains and spare fabric, so I’m virtually swimming in material. Basically, I’m having a blast, and I can’t wait to show my knitting club!
Sorry to say I don’t have a digicam, or I’d be sharing photos like a proud mom.
Please share your own crafting triumphs!
Hey, those are cool! Did you do one of the ones pictured in the link?
I’m envious of people who can knit and crochet. I’ve tried both and I just can’t get the hang of it. I can sew, though, and I’m going to try making a shawl soon.
Ok, now I’m really curious to see other people’s accomplishments. So I’ll submit what I’ve done lately.
This is the regalia I made for myself to wear at my last pow-wow. I’ve never made a dress before, and I was only working off of a vague pattern, so this was a big undertaking for me. All hand-stitched - took me about 3 weeks. It’s accented with cowrie shells, ribbon, horsehair and tin cones. I didn’t stitch the armpits right, though, and already ripped a hole in each, so I’ll have to fix that somehow. But otherwise I’m pretty pleased with it.
Bless you. My mother-in-law crochets rag rugs and she’s been fretting lately that the art is going to die out with her generation (and I, being an ungrateful wench and not really her daughter after all, have yet to pick up the torch).
AFG I am just starting my first “Fabric tapestrey” project – those are the designs with two or more colors done in a pattern. I am just doing the basic pinwheel design, though I very much asipre to the more complex and stunning designs pictured.
I find knitting somewhat troublesome but its hard for me to believe you had so much trouble learning to crochet – did you have anyone to teach you? But I guess we all have our knacks – my sewing skills are truly minimal. I enjoy crochet but there’s only just so many scarves I can give away
Rag rugs neatly solve that problem!
IL – my grandma and mom are very excited that I’m taking up this craft. They will be the first recipients of my completed work.
Its amazing how many people want to give you their old curtains, sheets and random yardage when they find out you can make use of them. I haven’t bought a single yard of fabric but have enough already for several rugs.
I finally figured out the mysteries of crocheting a Beaded Tube. I am so proud of myself! It took 3 evenings of ripping out and cussing, but I did it.
I have also done a simple cable pattern on a sock for my mom.
I have found I do not enjoy either of these skills, but I am very glad to know that I can do them.
This summer I built myself a Venetian courtesan’s gown out of . . . stretch denim jacquard! It’s gorgeous and very girly. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures, but I have an exhaustive write up on my LiveJournal that I can link to if anyone has the desperate need to read about it.
I’m also currently knitting a very complicated skirt with lace and cables. I’m predicting I’ll finish it just in time for it to be too warm to wear.
Oooh, beaded crochet… sparkly…
