I am boycotting the Olympics

I thought I ought to let you know as nobody will much care. Still, the heck with the Xi government, the CCP and the IOC.

So there.

No wonder I didn’t see you on TV when I was watching it.

Yep. That wasn’t me. I am glad you noticed.

Me too. Of course, the fact that I have no interest in them in the first place helps.

I’ll join - I don’t give a Big Rat’s Ass for any organized sport.

Dan

The world salutes your brave stance in the face of injustice.

I know I am risking a lot, but it is time to draw a line in the sand.

Snow.

I’m not boycotting, but I am not going out of my way to watch. If I have something else to do that will take priority. NBC coverage is horrible and the commentators suck, and how much figure skating, overblown human interest stories, and Shawn White can anyone take?

What would it take for you to take even the slightest step against concentration camps and religious persecution?

How is not watching the Olympics on TV doing anything for those issues? Want to make a point? - don’t buy anything made in China. Let us know how that goes.

What are these "Olympics"of which you speak?

My wife told me the other night that she was not planning on watching any of the Olympics, and I said that was fine with me. I might watch some curling if I happen to come across it, but I expect most of the prime time coverage will be figure skating, ice dancing, etc.

TV Olympic coverage just hasn’t been the same since Bob Costas retired.

Because very low viewership of a China-hosted Olympics will piss off the regime?

No it won’t. They’ve already been paid.

Nearly everyone “boycotting” the Olympics are people who wouldn’t be watching it anyway. Do you ordinarily avidly watch the Winter Olympics @Paul_was_in_Saudi ? If not, this is less than meaningless.

You might make a slight difference if you boycott the sponsors but only if it’s products that you normally use.

I’m not boycotting*.
I love the idea of peeps from alot of countries getting together to compete in friendly games of skill.
I just want it to be apolitical.
Too bad it can’t be that way.

*I still ain’t watching hockey.

Because?

In the past, I enjoyed watching the Winter Olympics – having grown up in Wisconsin, I’ve always had a fondness for being out in the snow, and I just found a lot of the sports to be enjoyable to watch, particularly the “sled” sports (bobsled, luge, skeleton).

As others have said, I’m not going out of my way to watch it this year, but that’s not news; I didn’t watch much of the last Winter Games, either. The fact that I don’t like the Chinese government is a small part of it this time out, but mostly it’s because I feel like the Olympic movement has lost its way – like FIFA, it’s clearly corrupt, and staging the Games is a ridiculously large expense for the host country (to the point that the IOC is now having trouble finding enough serious candidates to host games).

And, as I understand it, here in the U.S., NBC has put most of the coverage on their pay service, Peacock, to which I don’t care to sign up.

Their curling coverage has been decent.

I still miss Jim McKay.

WHAT?!?! That’s the only reason to watch in the first place!

(Although as the NHL has pulled out of the Olympics, and are using the break to make up cancelled games, I probably won’t get a chance to watch as much as I wanted to)
