…in the meantime, I am looking for a song. I’ve got just a snippet of it. Only one word and no tune.
First there is a slight modulation of the key, then six syllables (da-da da-da, da, da) followed by (I think) “No [something] no.”
This reminds me of a Married with Children episode.
In it Al, was humming a short tune, and went like hmmm, hmmm, him. He could not remember the name of the song. He went to an old school record shop and the guy there was naming songs that were obscure with less information and when Al got to him, he did not know the song. The song finished on the oldies radio station and Al thinks he has it figured out based on the line and the DJ said, most people think the song is named ‘blah’ (whatever Al thought the name was) but it is not, and the radio goes out before Al can hear the real title.
Glad you figured out the song before it drove you insane.
“Granny does your dog bite? No, child, no” is part of The Devil Went Down to Georgia?? I wonder what I thought they were saying.
“Master of the house…”
Also not going to brag (actually, I’m feeling deep shame) but the moment I saw the mention of “hmmm, hmmm, him” I remembered that it was actually “go with him” that Al remembered.
Meanwhile, the neurons that remembered all of the presidents and state capitals have been erased…
I’m remembering the old Honeymooner’sepisode, when Ralph wins a spot ona TV show similar to “Name That Tune” and has neighbor Ed Norton test him by playing tunes on the piano. Ed always starts off by warming up with the starting notes of Swanee River, which drives Ralph to fits of fury. Ralph is finally prepped and appears on the show, gets to the final week to go for $99,000, and of course the first question is “Who was the composer of Swanee River?”
In the spirit of the thread, I managed to conflate two Seinfelds, the one where George is singing “Master of the House” and it rubs off on Elaine’s dad who’s singing it later, and the one where Steinbrenner is mondegreening “Heartbreaker”:
love taker, cruel baker run this prison like a man.
Heart breaker, love-taker, shoe-maker,
won’t you cut my shoes for free.
Heartbreaker, Brubaker…
Ahh, I see. Funny thing about that episode; if you know the song well, you’ll notice Elaine’s dad is singing a completely different melody at the end. Like, he clearly doesn’t know the song, at all. I read that actor was a bit of a bear to work with, and I can just imagine him being like, “Yeah, yeah, it goes a little something like this, whatever, where’s my Scotch?”
The boxed set has some commentary about Lawrence Tierney, saying that he was supposed to be in several episodes as a semi-regular, but the cast and crew were terrified of him, so it never went anywhere.
Wow! I guess they could have recast him, like they did with Jerry’s dad, Lloyd Braun, etc., but maybe they were scared off from the idea of anyone playing Elaine’s dad after that…
