I love getting a personal response to my posts and since I post a lot I get them fairly frequently. Yes, I’ll admit it, I’m a motor-mouth (or motor-typer?). I don’t read every thread nor respond to everything that I think is really funny on the threads I do read. Just because I or someone else doesn’t respond personally to you doesn’t mean we didn’t read it or think it was funny.
Can you imagine how long some of these threads would get if EVERYONE got a personal response? If you feel invisible, don’t. There are probably a hundred lurkers who love you and follow you around but are too shy to respond. You might have an entire fan club and not even know it!
There is another aspect to not getting replies: maybe you are totally correct.
Following the protocol of various newsgroups, I rarely post “I agree with what you said” as a single-line response.
If I have something to add, (or a correction), I’ll post. Otherwise I generally don’t. The one exception is on threads where I have asked for info or assistance. At some point I try to remember to post a Thank You (which is usually a single line).
I also check posts to which I’ve contributed to see whether I have been corrected (or mis-corrected < eg >) or whether someone has expanded the information beyond my limited offering. I usually just check them in the midst of the regualar list unless I am in a fairly heavy discussion or debate.
I think it also might be a recognition thing…I mean there are some people that have been on here for over a year. Like being the new guy(gal)at work…nobody really notices you till you’ve been there a couple of months
Nope, time doesn’t have a lot to do with it. Can you piss people off? You’ll get noticed. Can you post something that they care about? You will get noticed. Fuck with a regular? You WILL get noticed. Post incomprehensible posts? You will get noticed. Not in the way you want but yeah, you’ll get a rep. For being a moron. In that way, you will get noticed. Be consistently around, posting, caring and letting yourself be known? You’ll get noticed. Afraid of it? Too shy to post much? Won’t take a stand? Nope, you won’t get shit.
Be bold, be honest, be yourself; share. You will get noticed! Just like real life.
