I am moving, this is the crap I have gotten rid of.

Wow, i have a lot of stuff. Pointless stuff, heavy stuff, dusty stuff, and worthless stuff. I have thrown out in the last two days.

A tv, a clock, over 150 CDs, clothes, phones, university books, old bills, sorting baskets, posters, sunglasses, briefcases, old papers, a palm pilot.

But hey this feels good! I resolve next year to only buy the shit that is neccessary and small.

Moving is a wonderful excuse to throw crap away. When I was in undergrad and had to move from dorms and apartments to home a few times in a few years, I got rid of a lot of junk. It’s liberating. My boyfriend is about to move and I helped him get rid of clothes he’s had since junior high - he’s 25 now. Goodwill just got a big influx of Nautica and Tommy Hilfiger throwbacks

I’m moving soon, and already sent most of the furniture / odds & sods to be sold at a second hand shop. Ha! They’re selling the living room set for more than I bought it for. The move will be great: fridge, tv, stove, computer stuff, bed, couple of boxes of books, bags of clothes.

One way to keep the junk down is to resolve to exchange rather than adding to your home. Something comes in … something else has to go!

I have purged truckloads of stuff over the years at moving-time.

I deeply, deeply, regret giving my cassette tape collection to a resale store.

That’s the only thing I wish I had made the space to keep.

HAHAAAAAAAA!!! Sure you do!

I resolve it!

No really, my plan next year is to finally save up a shit load of money and say good bye to this pile of dirt that I call home right now.

Good for you!

In one of the apartments I lived in there was a table in the laundry room that had a sign on it that read ‘Don’t need it anymore? Leave it here!’ People would leave all kinds of things down there. I thought it was pretty cool. When I moved out I left quite a few things there myself.

I am the opposite of a hoarder. I will throw most anything away except for things that are currently being used and a few sentimental things that make me happy. I have a mental program that says “Justify Yourself!” to any inanimate object (this actually includes animate objects as well but that is for another day)". If an object cannot justify why it is still here then it gets execution via the trash or a dumpster. It is surprising how many things cannot justify themselves even on appeal so it is a good way to get rid of lots of things quickly and the resulting lack of clutter is very satisfying. You end up with a small group of things that you actually use.

Want mine? I occasionally get into purgy moods and the cassettes vex me. I NEVER listen to them, and yet I can’t just toss them.

I do attach too much sentiment to things, and the case of cassettes instantly catapaults me to the 80s, my Gremlin, the stereo my grandparents put in it as a birthday gift (and spent more than I did on the car).

I’d have no problem handing (or mailing) them to someone who really would be happy to have them, btu I cannot bring myself to just toss them in a donation box.

I think a big part of my clutter problem is the degree of anxiety I have over HOW to dispose of things. There are days when I fantasize that a rolloff dumpster is in my driveway and I can just toss all of it. Clothes, papers, furniture, books in and it won’t be my problem anymore. But that would be irresponsible. So I don’t do it - or anything else.

Having moved great distances (from here to Europe, from Europe back to here) I have it down to a science:

  1. Sell, give or throw away anything that doesn’t fit in your suitcase/duffel bag.
  2. Go.
  3. Start over.

Surprisingly, it takes no time whatsoever to fill your new place with the same crap you had before. Some kitchen stuff, the bed, computer and/or television and you’re good to go. The rest will follow in due course and soon you will be ready to sell, give or throw away all that for the next move.

(Family heirlooms, pictures, etc. can be put in boxes and shipped, if need be.)
