I am not going to be a pornographer (darn!)

I was thinking of creating a little commercial website. Nothing fancy, just something to bring in a couple bucks. Her Magnificence, WebGoddess Opalcat, has provided me with some guidance as to porno links, which have proven to be a profitable sideline for her. However, as a father of young girls and an almost respected member of my community, I have some reservations about having a hobby I can’t mention to anyone. I’ve had enough of those over the years.

Wife suggested something along the lines of the occult. I have always been interested in curse removal, but she thinks that dances a little too close to wire fraud. (Hey! First prove they weren’t cursed THEN you can prove I didn’t remove the curse!) She is a good writer and has cast horoscopes before, keeping star charts in her head (“I don’t need no stinkin’ computer!”). And she can make stuff up, too. After all, as the disclaimer states, this is “for entertainment purposes only.”

We (she) have some other ideas for commercial tie-ins that I’d rather not go into (there are spies EVERYWHERE, you know!). However, this is the first time we’ve set up a website and I was wondering if there were any good (free) references for how to go about it. Or any other tips ya’ll might have.

Maybe I’d have gotten a better response if I said I WAS becoming a pornographer!

:bump:

You might want to check out the legals. In some jurisdictions (and with a website that’s a big gray area) it’s illegal to sell fortune telling that claims to predict future events.

Good point. If they illegalized it in my jurisdiction the economy would collapse, so I don’t think about that being a potential point of friction.

This whole thing is a gray area. Astrology is so much BS, but people are willing to pay for good advice and if there is a show associated with it there is more value for their money. Actual pin-downable predictions are specifics the best have avoided since oracle at Delphi.

It’s not like I would be supplying the advice, so those of you who are set to provide links to Dropzone’s Bad Advice of the Past can stop right now!

What about a gambling site? I don’t know about the legals though, you may have to move to the Cayman Islands or something.

If you can’t help then do no harm. Why not start a site where you help web porn addicts; then you can still be in that world if you choose. When busted with a porn site up, you can say that it is part of your work helping the poor down and out web porn addicts. Who knows you may make a few bucks and clean up the net at the same time. This will for sure add to your great social rep that you already have!

Well, I once tried (as a joke) to sell my toenail clippings on Ebay only to learn that they wont traffic in body parts. Mentioning this to a co-worker, she told me her ex-roomate used to make a nice bit of coint selling her used panties, but that Ebay now refuses to traffic in those as well.

So, find a need and fill it!

Helping people? Where’s the money in that?

Oh, I get it–I set up a site that is OSTENSIBLY to help addicts or, better yet, lead the righteously curious to the “wrong side of the tracks” so they can see, FIRST HAND, that which they condemn, then get kickbacks from the links! Sleazy, but (and?) it might just work…

As for my “great social rep,” you’re new here, aren’t you?

As for gambling, the State of Illinois has a monopoly on that around here. But gambling links…?

And who says I can’t help, other than all of the people I’ve advised in the past?
