Why?
Because a doofus “professor” (whose main qualification for teaching seems to be that she was a national shot-put champion) is teaching the “other side” of the vaccination “controversy”.
Queen’s students say instructor teaches that vaccines are harmful
Queen’s University is under fire after students complained that one of its instructors has been teaching for several years that vaccines are harmful.
Melody Torcolacci is an adjunct instructor who teaches the Health 102 and Health 200 courses at the Queen’s School of Kinesiology and Health Studies. She was a track and field coach, but resigned in 2011 and has been teaching since.
…
“No scientific evidence exists showing vaccines are NOT contributing to increased incidence of chronic illness and disability in children,” the next slide says.
The presentation also says autism has increased more significantly among vaccinated children. It ends with links to four videos critical of vaccination and a reminder to “especially watch these … all of them! Going to be on test!!!”
At least the students understand basic principles:
Anti-vaccination instruction at Queen’s needs review, students urge
“It’s a pretty popular course at Queen’s,” said Steven Patterson, who was shocked by the slides, videos and lack of credible information presented when he took the course.
“There’s not always two legitimate sides,” Patterson said.
And the Principal has ordered an investigation:
Queen’s Principal Daniel Woolf issued a statement with regards to the situation.
“I became aware today of the situation regarding HLTH 102 and have asked the provost and vice-principal (academic) to work with Arts and Science to look into this matter and gather more information,” read the statement posted on the Queen’s Gazette website late Wednesday afternoon.
“The university is committed to the academic freedom of our faculty members; at the same time, the university expects that faculty members will present intellectually rigorous research and course material and that they will present available scientific evidence objectively and declare their biases. The university also expects that courses meet the needs of our students in terms of promoting critical thinking, independent judgment, and discussion.”
Queen’s prof’s anti-vaccination teachings cause uproar
So, she’s proficient at throwing the discus, the shot, and BS. Great qualifications for teaching science.
if she was a champion shit heaver then why should she stop.
“No scientific evidence exists showing vaccines are NOT contributing to increased incidence of chronic illness and disability in children"
I’m glad she’s teaching the scientific method.
You gotta hand it to Canadian students, who complain about being misinformed. From the news stories I’ve seen, American students complain when correctly informed that Jesus doesn’t take part in science experiments.
Kudos to the principal for balancing “oh, god, get her out of here” with the appropriate paean to academic freedom. And I don’t mean that snarkily.
