That should be “Responses Two & Four.”
Whoa. Let’s back off the young one a little, shall we? Responses two and four prove conclusively to you and to me that the story is untrue. But we know the science and we know the sources.
In this case we appear to have someone who has no science background and who further has been living a life of faith only with a minimal of inquiry. It was obviously necessary to take dansir on a step-by-step walk through the logic of why the story could not be true. I for one am ready to accept her conclusion that she now knows the story is not true and her promise not to spread it further.
Let’s reserve the L-word for those truly deserving of it, OK? Chasing people off when they appear to be trying is no way to fight ignorance.

I agree. You’re welcome as far as I’m concerned dansir, as long as you abide by the rules of clear and logical argument.
I started a reply but was knocked offline. I do not see it here now but if it returns sorry about repeating myself.
But here it goes again. I am going to explain myself as clearly as possible.
I do have a science degree but not in astronomy or computers. Dr. F. did provide evidence but I did need to be taken step by step as man says. I did not understand that the computer needed more info other than where the stars are now but now I do. To me DR.F. was he said and the weblink he provided the same. The reason it was easier to believe Dr. Hill’s lie was because I have faith in God and the Bible. So the fact that someone proved it happened, in my mind was no big deal I know it happened. It did not occur to me that he was lieing. It did not occur to me logically that he could not have done this. Does this help you to understand where I am coming from.
thanks manhattan and tinker.
Well, now you’ve got my curiosity up.
Which science is your degree in, dansir? My Masters of Science is in Computer Science, but for a while I was minoring in physics.
Tracer,
Not a master, just a bachelors in biology and very little chemistry. I quit going to college when I had my youngest who is now four. I might go back and finish in August when he starts school.
Hmmm … bio and chem. Were you thinking of eventually applying to med school?
Well, Dansir – I hope you didn’t think I was telling you to leave, or questioning your right to be here. I think this is a swell place for you, and frankly, although I do think you’re a bit credulous, I don’t find you an obnoxi-poster at all. I was just curious how you found out about our happy crew of misfits. You just don’t seem like a doper (although I have no reason to believe that you won’t develop into one.) As I said before, a little education about Urban Legends would surely benefit you greatly. But, in any case, please consider yourself perfectly welcome as far as I’m concerned!
Jess
Remember the Straight Dope credo: It’s all about wiping out ignorance, not coddling the ignorant.
Dansir: As a recent victim myself of lies, convenient omissions, and misconstruings concerning me, I’d like you to know that I’m not suggesting you leave this site either.
What I’m suggesting is that you approach what’s told to you as a proof as though it were something your professor has asked you to prove in class. What could it hurt? If nothing else, it’s a nice exercise.
Tracer,
To be quite honest, I still dont know what I want to be when I grow up. laughing. I have always been interested in the human body but do not really want to be a dr. or a nurse. One of my best friends took the classes with me and was going for R.N. She gets angry at me because I would get A’s easily and she studied night and day for C’s. She has finished but cant pass the test. I wanted to be a teacher. I substitute now because I have a four year old. I wanted to be home more than at work. He will start school this year. I love working with children but I dont want to be a teacher, way too much responsibility and no control. I have considered working as an aid. I also would like to go back to college for law, paralegal. With my first child, I worked and went to college six years. I had a burn out and missed out on a lot. With my second child, we decided it would be best to be a mom first and the rest second. I usually tend to give a 100 percent or nothing so mom it has been.
Thanks guys and you are right if a story comes along and it falls into my illusion of life, I tend to believe it. I need to start questioning things more no matter.
My brother was the same way once. He’s usually quite a rational person, but when Fox aired that awful Live from the Pyramids show, he swallowed the arguments of the lunatic-fringe Egyptologists hook, line, and sinker. Why? Because each of them claimed that their “overwhelming” evidence was being ignored by the Evil Mainstream Archaeological Community, Inc., who is so afraid of new ideas that might tear down their pet theories that they conspire to silence them. After all, Live from the Pyramids didn’t show any “mainstreamers” addressing the specific claims of the lunatic-fringe, so the fringers’ claims of being ignored must be true, right?
Dansir, welcome back. I’d have said something sooner, but I’ve been away. I hope you have more success in getting across your ideas this time than when you were here the first time (which people can check out in the thread at: http://www.straightdope.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000680.html ), when you were upset at being questioned, showed pretty much no understanding of science and biology even though you claim to have a degree in that field, and left in a huff only to come back using a fake user name (WOW) to argue your case.
Apparently, from reading this thread, you still would rather trust some urban legend than science (presuming the legend is pro-religion, of course).
David,
Doesnt sound like much of a welcome. I had alot of stuff going on then and I was sick. I do have a degree in science as I said but does not mean I know everything. I really wanted to forget about that thread and that time in my life and try to start over. I am not wow but I do know who is. I suppose he thought it would make me feel better to post but I told him that I was not going to read it and still havent. Do I owe you are someone an apology…if I do …I am sorry…and if you need more facts I will email them but I go by dansir everywhere and somethings I dont care to post.
dansir, though it has been asked so many times, I will ask it again.
What degree do you hold, and in what science do you hold it in? Also, would this degree be from an accredited college?
Slythe: See dansir’s message posted 02-17-2000 10:17 PM. She says she has a bachelor’s degree in biology and “very little chemistry.” No mention of which college it was from or whether the college was accredited, though.
university south alabama…accredit. sorry didnt think where was that important. Graduated in 95 when I was pregnant with my son.
Ah, educated in the good ol’ U.S.A., I see. (Get it? Har!)
dansir,
Thank you for the compliment of my new wife. She means the world to me.
I take it from this you are willing to accept that the Bible is not intended to be intrepreted literally in all passages?
