I am the Crazy Cat Lady of African Greys

Its official. I have four of them now. Steve, from an overcrowded household (5 birds, 3 dogs, 2 kids, and pocket pets), Zahzoo who terrorized his owner (and his owner’s boyfriend, and 2 dogs). I agreed to bird-sit for a friend who had to go to California to see her terminally-ill mother. She dropped off 2 tame and quiet Timneh greys. One of them felt in LURRVE with my husband. The other one claims he does not like us and is always trying to snuggle up to us and complain about how about how dreadful we are . He doesn’t talk, but communicates through grumbling and chirping. All four of them are less intrusive then my poor deceased conure.

My friend is feeling overwhelmed this year. He mother is terminally ill, her husband died of cancer this spring, and now her kids are trying to break the trust he set up for her so they can split his savings, and also get her evicted from her house because “She isn’t really family anymore”. So when she asked to keep them, we agreed to take care of them until her life is a little less traumatic.

Steve has elected himself Alpha, and the wonder-twins totally buy into it. Whatever Steve does, they copy. Zahzoo appears to think they have always lived here. They all seem to enjoy being a flock, but it complicates watching DVDs. If we watch, Steve wants to watch. Everyone else wants to Be Like Steve.

You can’t just leave us hanging… There needs to be a new addendum to the kittens/puppies rule - no threads about parrots without pictures!

PHOTOS??!!!???

I miss my bird. She was an eclectus, beautiful red and blue. In 2005 I became terribly ill and once hospitalised she was given away by friends who felt it was for the best. (It probably was, there was no one who could entertain her during the day and I wasn’t going to be out of the hospital and the long-term health care for over 3 months.)

She was wild when I got her, nasty and agressive. But with patience and care she got to the point where she enjoyed sitting with me.

I often think of getting another - and have looked around a little for a Grey. But the truth is, my life-style right now doesn’t easily support a bird - they need a lot of attention. But I still miss her.

Grey photos, please.

Want pictures! Finally an animal thread I’m really interested in, and no photos! I want a grey so badly.

Conurepete,

Foul!!! You can’t talk about your Wittle Fuzzies without linking to pictures. Truly bad form, my friend. Now, we’ll wait here while you go snap some photos and get them uploaded.

taptaptaptap*tap…

Here is my first try at posting pictures : http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/conurept/detail?.dir=d4ddre2&.dnm=251ere2.jpg&.src=ph
The first photo is the wonder-twins, the green bird is George, the one with an all black beak is Zahzoo, and the timneh blinking his third eyelid is Steve. Hopefully I will be able to get a picture of Steve on his back to post later

Isn’t that Steve on his back in the last picture? Ohhhh, he’s so cute!

This should be Steve lying on his back : http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/conurept/detail?.dir=d4ddre2&.dnm=a00cre2.jpg&.src=ph

I noticed one of them standing on a flat surface. Does this bother them? It seems like their feet are designed for branches or similar perches.

Naw, my white-cap pionus used to run across the carpet no problem. She loved popcorn and would come running to the opening of the kitchen when I made the beeping noises on the microwave. She learned to recognize it, you see. Woe to me when I was heating up something else, though, or god forbid I ate popcorn and didn’t share it!

Yay! Birdies! Cute guys. I love the clicky-clacky of little talons.
Murphy the greater Jardine’s is currently reducing a cardboard box to tiny bits. I wonder if I could rent him out for document disposal?

The greys are kid of slow on flat surfaces: they don’t seem to run on the toes or hop like conures, but they certainly don’t mind. We are teaching them “No birds on floor” to prevent trouble.
That innocent-looking grey on the flat surface used to pick the lock on his cage, inflate, growl and scream and charge after people. His top charging speed is technically a waddle

I have a parrotlet now; I miss having a big bird. Sigh. Maybe someday.

Better yet - buy him a $10 toy and watch him ignore it in favor of the box!

Well, while I would love an African Grey, I am the proud slave of a 2.5 year female pearl cockatiel and a 2 year java finch.

Until I got Eppie (the cockatiel), I had no idea of the personality these birds have. She is absolutely beautiful, intellient and totally spoilt!

Oh, and also not camera shy :stuck_out_tongue:

I poop on you or I bite you!

I love you or I Bite You!

Work NOW or I Bite You!

And My Absolute Favourite:

I chase the camera so I can Bite You!

You are brave, to take on a whole flock of Greys. The one I have is all I can handle!

LOL threnodyangelfire, that picture is scary!! Does she really bite you, though?! YIKES!

All the birds are so pretty; I have to admit, though, those beaks (and the possibility of BITING!) scares me. nervous laughter Conurepete, I’m not sure if you qualify for crazy cat lady of parrots; isn’t it 5 or more?

Thanks to all who have shared pictures.

They seem to have already decided to follow The Laws of Steve:

  1. do as Steve does
  2. form a religion around the worship of Conurepete’s husband
  3. have a nap between 1 and 4 every afternoon
  4. give the Second person to come home at night a very hard time
  5. just because you worship someone does not imply that you will obey
  6. you have to step-up when Conurepete says, but you don’t have to step-down if you are suddenly and mysteriously deaf and happen to be looking in the opposite direction so that you can’t make eye contact Even If someone turns you around or slowly bonks you into the perch.
