I bought a persimmon...

at the store today, and decided to eat it. It was a nice bright orange color, and had a firm-yet-soft texture, so I assumed it was ripe. About halfway through, though, I discovered that the inside of my mouth was starting to resemble leather. So I got online and learned that persimmons are astringent and must be allowed to get mushy before they are edible.

Ugh.

Except for fuyu persimmons–you can eat those while they’re still firm.

when they fall off’n the tree persimmon’s is good eatin’… if ya kin beat the 'possums to 'em!

Hehe, Tha’s a trick I played on my poor, unsuspecting brother-in-law. I wonder why he doesn’t like to eat at my house now?

An unripe persimmon will suck the spit right out of your mouth.

I have never seen persimmons sold in a store…they are only fit to eat for about five minutes.

I used to have them growing in the yard. The squirrels just love 'em. Now a mess of squirrel meat’s the best thing about having a persimmon tree.

Gosh I miss Arkansas.

I love the way squirrils skinned out and thrown on the bbq pit look like little dogs…
