I am thinking about getting cable modem service. How many of you have broadband? Is it worth the cost?
And this is my 100th post. Have a beer and tell me what you think about your broadband service.

It’s worth the 50 bucks a month to me (hold out for free installation, though).
I have DSL, and I believe cable and DSL are comparable in terms of speed and convenience. It’s not like changing channels on TV, but it’s quite a bit faster and more stable than a dialup, and the quick logon is great. It still stalls (this MB is notoriously slow, even with broadband), but I spend enough time working and playing online that it’s worth it to me.
Happy 100th!

Cable is so worth it!!! I could never go back. Of course, I also held out for a free installation promotion.
And in honour of your 100th post, I’ll have a beer. Anyone else want me to celebrate something? Heck, I’ll have a beer on behalf of all of you. I’ll just check and see how many registered members there are here…
I hope I can get free installation the website says installation is over $100 and doesnt include a NIC(I have one already).
We’ve had DSL now for about seven months and love it! I don’t think I could ever go back.
YES!!! It is worth every penny that the cable company squeeeeezes out of me!
just like I would not walk to Vancouver from here, I cannot imagine spending my time downloading files on a 56K modem (or worse! shudder ).
definitely worth it, you must get it if you have the chance!
btw i have DSL
I don’t have it, but I’ll congratulate you and drink your beer.
Broadband is worth it, although IMO cable is not quite as good as DSL in my area. In other areas it is comperable or superior to DSL.
Well, I live in hicksville so there is no way I could get DSL. I think cable is faster anyway. DSL allows the ISP to set a bandwidth limit. With cable you can get up to 1.5 Mbit during light usage times (I think).
Which is faster is usually deoendent on where you are. 3 caveats - if you have a fixed IP you are more susceptible to hacks. Cabel modems are affected MUCH more on how many people in your area are accessing, and they can access your system. Also, I owuld keep a dialup as backup in case of outage (get a Juno/Freeride/etc freebie for this)
I downloaded about 20 songs during lunch today (about an hour) from Napster.
Oh yes, you need DSL…
Cable modems are usually a bit quicker than DSL. But on the down side you are sharing the lines with other subscribers, while DSL is all you. Either one beats a standard modem tenfold, so yea, it’s worth the cost. As Demo said, we have DSL, and I do love it.
Happy 100 mblackwell
The truth is, it depends. I get a true 1.5 MBit from my DSL connection, people on Time Warner cable nearby are lucky if they break 1 MBit ever. It depends on the area, service provider, etc.
I wish I could tell you if a cable modem was worth it. Unfortunately, the cable modem that I had installed six weeks ago still doesn’t work. The cable company has been out countless times. They even went so far as to replace all of the cable lines in my house and have replaced the modem twice, but the thing has not worked even for one second. They think the “node” is bad (don’t ask me what a node is, I haven’t a clue). However, they are in no hurry to fix it. That’s okay though because they are finally rolling out DSL in our neighborhood next month. If the cable modem isn’t working by then, I’m going to chuck it out the window and maybe even cancel my regular cable service too because I’m tired of paying $60 a month for 88 channels of crap on the television anyway.
Oops sorry, that almost sounds like a rant.
I’m so with you one that one Shad.
I have dsl, my friend has cable- both will not go back to a dial up modem.broadband might be almost as cheap as conventional dialup if:
1 you have a dedicated phone line you will get rid of with broadband
2 you are paying premium isp charges i.e. AOL 21.95 per month assuming you will drop them
3 you pay something for all those dial up calls
4 your cable service is not that expensive, my friends is =$30/month my dsl is $40/month
as to which one is faster, most of the time it is his with dl speeds ave 100kb/s and as high as 200 kb/s. I max out at 60 kb/s but I get it often and not effected by high usage times where his cable service can drop as low as 20kb/s
note 1.5mbits/sec = 1500kbits/sec = 187.5 kbytes/sec
the 187.5 is what you will see during DL, 1.5mb/s is what your service will advertise
Congrats on 100!
So few make it so far. (I’m not kidding. The stats I’ve seen show you’ve passed thousands already.)
As for the cable, as weirddave told me, “Get ready to become a speed snob.”
I have a cable modem, and I love it. (Thanks weirddave)
Don’t have it unfortunatly, but beleive it or not I DO make my living off of it. I am a L2 DSL tech for BellSouth. Now if they only PAID more I could get the same technology at home that I troubleshoot at WORK with. Cheap fucks.
