I can make my stomach "growl" voluntarily. Normal?

Prompted by the eustachian tube post, I thought I’d pose this question.

At certain times (not sure what makes this work one time and not others except that it is typically when my stomach is not full), I can push my stomach out and suck it back in (like when you try to make it look like you have a gut and then suck it back in to fit into pants) and my stomach will make a loud growling noise. If I do it slowly, the noise is slow (lasts longer), quickly and it is quick. I’ve never met anyone else that can do this and typically, when I demonstrate for people, they say, “That’s disgusting!”

It sounds like I’m sucking air in and out of a pocket and forcing it back out. But what pocket is this? my stomach? And how come other people can’t do this? What makes this noise?

As an aside, if this helps (it may just cloud the issue), I have been diagnosed with duodenitis. My duodenum (link from tummy to intestine) is swollen and has some folds in it.

Man, you must have been popular in Junior High! That’s better than belching on demand!

If it’s the same thing that happens to me, it’s called Borborygmus. It happens to me about two hours after I’ve eaten, and only if I inhale deeply, expanding down into my gut. It usually lasts for only a little while, but it can be pretty darn loud. I even have a couple of recordings of myself singing where you can hear it.

This link will get you a brief description:

I’m sure you can find more detailed descriptions on medical terminology sites.

Cheers.

I believe the same thing happens to me, self induced growling/grumbling… freaks me out, I dont like it one bit…

Not sure exactly what it is, but it happens about a day of fasting after eating alot of food… I guess it happens when my stomach is basically empty but the rest of my gut is trying to empty itself of shitty food maybe???

But as a fix, just drink water… weird growling just happened for about 30 minutes straight, then i drank about 12oz of water and it immediatly ceased (i can now pull my stomach all the way in, and expand it all the way out, no freaky sounds).

Hopefully good old H2O works for you too, im curious
