Poll coming.
If you had to pick between three “all you can eat” restaurants of high quality, which would you pick-Chinese, Mexican or Italian?
I frequent Italian and Mexican establishments far more often. But if I ever really feel the need to stuff myself, Chinese is the way to go…
but you will be hungry an hour later.
Mexican BTW.
I am addicted to Chinese buffets. I should be ashamed, but I am not.
Chinese has the best variety, in my experience. Granted, a lot of that is American food, but that’s exactly where the variety is. Ethnic food as eaten in the U.S. is very often low on choices.
The problem with Italian food is that a week later, you’re hungry again.
Italian FTW.
Other: Indian.
I like all three, but Chinese has a lot more variety than Italian or Mexican (hardly a surprise, given the size of the country). Of course, Indian also has a lot of variety, and I like Indian food better than any of those three anyway, so I’ll also agree with Biffy.
Churrascaria- Never been to one… but it seems like it is my Holy Grail of all you can eat… a buffet of grilled meats and sausages? What is not to like?
But my favorite Buffet of all time was none of these. It was a “North Florida/South Georgia Cracker Buffet” which really wasn’t that far from a soulfood buffet (you saw lotsa Crackas and Black Folks equally). If you could do it nationwide, maintain its quality, style, and consistency, I would bet, it would soon be the number one buffet in competition and contention with all others. Give Golden Corral a run for its money and blow Old Country out of the water on the franchise level.
I’m gonna go with Biffy, too, but also add that I rarely “stuff myself” because doing so makes me feel like I’m gonna hurl. I eat to the point of not being hungry anymore and stop.
Others: When you find an ‘all you can eat’ sushi bar that has good sushi, there’s nothing like it.
Seconding someone’s recommendation for Indian buffet.
Ohhh, it’s Ole Times Country Buffet, btw. If one could open a franchise here on 75 between here and Detroit, one might just have something. Substitute some of the fresh seafood specials with Lake Erie delicacies to substitute.
That was one of the first places I was introduced to by my wife’s family while in Brazil. You sit down and eat while guys are circulating throughout the restaurant holding spits with great hunks of every kind of meat on them. When one passes by, you nod and he slices off a portion onto your plate.
This goes on until you are thoroughly stuffed.
Oh, Ole-Times was also one of the few buffets I’ve ever seen with a big ol’ chafer full of Young Green Lima Beans. It also seemed like people were actually eating them as “soul food”. They also consistently had two kinds of Greens Turnips/Mustards/Clollards/Cabbage- and of course, real mashed potatoes. Real Southern Banana Pudding and Pies, it’s kind of a carnivores’ buffet, but if I were vegetarian I could find many satisfying American Veg Comfort foods, and certainly some fish if you lean that way.
As others have said, Chinese gets the vote on buffet-style dining because of the greater variety.
Yes: the best all-you-can-eat-place that I’ve been to was a sushi place in Orlando, Florida. The trouble is that such a place is not going to be cheap.
Mongolian Barbecue
Used to go all the time in California, but have only seen one since I moved to New England, in Boston. Good deal on meat and veggies grilled to order.
Yea, I mean what is a Mexican Buffet but beans, seasoned taco meats, salad, salsa, tortillas, and maybe some guac? Kinda redundant. But then what is really a chinese buffet but dark meat chicken, shrimp, ketchup soy, onions, green peppers, some sprouts, and other veg?
I love Chinese buffets, also Japanese sushi/seafood buffets like Todai but my favorite would be an Indian buffet.
