For the last week or so I have been unable to open any New York Times web sites. All other sites open just fine. The Times’s main site is http://www.nytimes.com Other Times sites have various extentions. Each time the site tries to open, but eventually times out, giving the error message
I tried blowing away all my cookies, but that didn’t help.
Might be a stale cache page. Assuming you’re using Windows IE, go to Tools > Internet Options. Click the Clear Temporary Files button (or Clear Files in v. 6.0). Close all IE windows and restart it.
Eh, it’s working for me. My guess would be that maybe their server was down temporarily earlier this afternoon. It’s 11:20 p.m. here, so maybe the traffic has slowed, or maybe their hamster finally managed to get hold of some bennies.
I run a merciless setup of anti-spyware, anti-popup, and anti-cookie programs, and I also cannot read any articles from the NYT unless I disable some or all of those programs.
QED, I tried deleting all temporary internet files. I gather this was your suggestion. That didn’t solve the problem.
Sofa King, I don’t have any specific anti-popup programs. However, in looking at the Internet Options menu, under Privacy, there’s a slider that’s currently set to Medium – “Blocks third party cookies that use personally identifiable information without your implicit consent”
I have never tried using this menu. Is it possible that this setting somehow got out of whack? Do you have any thoughts about how I should adjust it?
FYI I have also written to the Times to ask their advice.
