I can't have a dog!

The only dog I’ve ever owned was a dachshund. Technically, she was my grandmother’s, but we got her the year that we lived with grandma. She had a great personality and was lots of fun to play with (I was about 10). She decided that she was my mom’s and always remembered my mom when we went back to visit and would run up and down the driveway with delight when we arrived.

Might think about getting one when I retire…

So, yeah, the owners might still be on vacation or something, but I think you probably need to resign yourself to adding to the menagerie, Baker. (I like Schatzi, by the way.)

One vote against. In my admittedly limited experience, Schatzi = ugly little rat-faced ankle-biter. (For some reason, they’re also always Schnauzers . . .) Surely a Doper dog can have a more distinctive name than that?

I named my (mostly) wire haired dachshund rescue Penny because of the color of her hair.

I don’t know if you meant these two sentences to be related, but in my experience they absolutely are. My little weenie dog gets plenty of exercise with just about a fifteen minute walk, but he’s more than capable of running for hours without getting tired. I don’t get it. He never stops.

No more news. The vet in Arkansas, where the dog was chipped, is not responding. I drove by the address of the non-responsive locally listed owner, and let’s just say it’s not a good looking place, in a run-down area. My vet says that if, in a couple of days, nothing more happens, he figures a good faith effort has been made, and the dog can be adopted by someone else… I have a lead on a potential new owner, but who knows how it will go.

I went to see her again today. She was so excited and wiggly. What a cute dog. Anyone in the east Kansas area want a cute dog?

I’m curious about the vet. What city is he in?

Well phooey - she’s better off with you (or with whomever you line up).

I wonder if the microchip can be re-addressed to the new owner?

Nathan.

Any dog that was chipped was loved at one time (how common is chipping? Not very, I’ll guess) so even tho the latest owner may not want her, someone did once. Maybe that person is still around.

Keep trying. Your experience shows up a weakness with the chip system – change a phone number and it’s useless.

I adopted a dog last October - she is chipped. I went to the chip site and changed the phone number to mine - the address too. And I put a picture up on the site.

Well, the vet says I have made a good faith effort to find the owner, so now I really have to find a home for the doxie.

Today I reminded my boss to call his friend that might take her. And since I’ll have to take her home from the vet and foster her while I look for a new owner I need to get a child gate to block off one of my rooms, so the dog and the cats don’t get into it too badly.

I’m going to call the shelter and ask advice on finding an owner, and the no-kill cat shelter. I realize it’s a dog, and not a cat, but they may have ideas on “blending” cats and dogs, and finding an owner.

CONGRATULATIONS! Now where are the pictures?

For what it’s worth, I have 6 large dogs and four cats and they all get along peacefully.

Any news on the pup, Baker?

The vet said that she can be adopted out now. Yesterday I had one of my cats at the vet for his semi-annual checkup, and the one vet tech said she had a friend who had intended to adopt a doxie, but the person who was going to give it to her changed their mind. So the tech said this person might want it. But it turns out her apartment’s pet policy changed, with no new animals allowed to be added. So that fell through.

If I can’t find a home for her by the beginning of next week I’ll take her home.

Oh, and the name she was originally registered with was “Angles” Strange name if I do say so.

If I do take her, and she needs a Dope appropriate name, how about “Cecilia”

I guess it’s gonna be my dog. In spite of my best efforts I’ve been unable to find another home for the doggie.

So today I’m going to tell the vet to get her spayed, give her the shots, and so on.

Now I need a name. Earlier upthread I’d thought of Schatzi. For a Dope connection it could be Cecelia. Or I could be like Buttercup in “The Princess Bride” Goldman said she was short on imagination, and named her horse “Horse” Maybe “Doggie”?

Baker, you’re good egg!

Of the names above, Cecelia tops the list. My next female dog will be named Amelia (from the Joni Mitchell song) if I have any say.

Usual spelling is “Cecilia” – which gets my vote.

Baker, if you don’t post pictures soon, I’m going to start fidgeting.

You said you found her at a convenience store. Was it by any chance a Seven Eleven? If so, how about Elf for a name? (German for Eleven). Sieben (for Seven) doesn’t have quite the same ring.

Or since you mention Buttercup - we knew a dachshund named Princess when we were growing up.

I like Elf better, however. Even if the store wasn’t a 7-11.

My friend named his: Diogie. Pronounced DeeOhGee
