I can't make broadband work

I recently switched from a… er… ‘normal’ internet… er… thingy (i really suck with computers but you probably just worked that out for yourself.) to broadband and i can’t make it work - when i go onto my computer the old internet connection thing still comes up and i tell it to go away and try to go on the internet but it tells me I’m offline. Since my dad had got it to work on his bit of the computer i decided to go on his to see if it was the same or not and it wasn’t, the old internet connection thing didnt come up and getting onto websites was no problem. How can i access my broadband thingy from my bit of the computer? Thanks.

After running your post through my handy Brittish English-American English translator, I read “bit” as equal to “part”. So you and dad are trying to access the internet via two different parts (profiles?) on the same computer. Am I right?

If I’m not right, then you’re saying that you and dad are trying to access - each from your own computer - some internet sharing device like a router. He can get to the router just fine but you can not.

If the second, I suggest having dad stop by and ask him to set up your computer like he did his own. If you want more detailed help from us, we’ll need more details on your setup.

Go into control panel - internet options - connections, and check that your new connection is set as the default one? just an idea

You were right the first time Attrayant, we use the same computer but have different parts of the computer. I’ve been having trouble with words all day. I’ll give it a go, GorillaMan, thanks.

Right, i just followed your advice and it seems you were right, the default is still BT and its supposed to be ntl. How do i go about changing it?

Is ntl in the list of connections you see? If it is, you can select it and then press the Default button.

However, I doubt whether you’ll find ntl there. I’m guessing your broadband connection is not related to dial-up but is rather something like ADSL or so. That would have to connect with the set-up of your TCP/IP protocol, I guess.

Could you tell us which Operating System you use, what kind of modem, and what technical acronyms are used to describe your kind of connection?

Tusculan - I don’t have a bloody clue what you’re talking about. All i can tell you is that NTL is not on the list with BT.

Let’s try again. ‘Broadband’ AFAIK is a general name for fast Internet connections. It doesn’t say very much about the specific technical side of the connection. We can’t really help you if we don’t know more about what exactly you have.

I checked NTL and Broadband and got at their website. They describe two possibilities:

So which is it?

When I look at their help on Cable Modems I find three possible cable modems listed:
> Motorola SurfBoard SB 4100 Cable Modem
> Terajet 210 DOCSIS Cable Modem
> ntl:home 100 Cable Modem

Again, which do you have? If you look at the modem the manufacturers name should be somewhere on it.

How was Broadband installed? Did someone come by? Did you do it yourself? Did you have to open your computer? Did you have to plug cables into something?

I’m not asking this to deter you, on the contrary. Additional information is necessary to be able to really help you.

BTW: if you look at the second link I gave above (help on Cable Modems), you see a detailed list (with pictures) of the Windows and Internet Explorer settings which you have to set accordingly. Maybe you could print it out (or write it down exactly), then try all these settings out.

Note: that only works if the hardware (=modem and sundry items) has already been connected properly. If not, don’t change the settings yet since that may make you lose your current connection through BT.

Thanks for your help by the way, its appreciated.

It says ntl home: 120 on the bck, i think its the third on your list. Someone came to the house to install it, its a seperate boxy looking thing, quite small with 2 leads in the back. I think one is attatched to the computer and another to the mains. When i say they installed it i mean they came to the house and did something or toher, we had to do some ind of installing thing with cds but this was only done on my dads part of the computer.

Bt has already been disconnected so unless i work this uot i can’t use the internet on my part of the computer. I know its been connected properly on my Dad’s part because I’m using it now, i just can’t access it from my part. I’ll have a look at the link.

I just followed the instructions but it hasn’t worked and i could only do half of the things it told me to do because my computer doesn’t look like the one in the screen shots, i couldn’t find half of the things it was telling me to click on because there were less tabs or things were all laid out differently. I’m getting quite frustrated with all of this so i think i’ll leave it for my brother to sort out. Besides, i have a ton of work to do.

If the Internet connection is connected right on your computer, the browser should look for it first before using dialup. Are you using a router?
