…or early Goth, I guess.
I was listening to Southern Death Cult yesterday, and I really want to hear more stuff like that. I switched to the Birthday Party after, and that fit too.
I don’t need to hear about The Cure, Bauhaus, Joy Division, or Sisters of Mercy, because I know. It doesn’t have to be a band that’s now accepted as “Goth” per se, but it does need to have that same musical style.
Tell me about some more obscure bands that do similar music, preferably from the same time period.
Thanks!
I’m not sure what Death Rock is, but Fields of the Nephilim are an early Goth Metal crossover band (and they rock, too. If you like proggy, their song Endomoniada has a pretty Floydian beginning. Acoustic blues? Celebrate. With lots of fast jams in between with the famous growlings of the lead singer complete with vague Lovecraftian and Sumerian references.)
Do you like Chameleons UK? They’re not really Goth, they’re like the Cure, but much better. Also try Legendary Pink Dots.
Well, if you liked The Southern Death Cult there was the The Death Cult that came after.
The epigenesis of TSDC, DC, and subsequently The Cult lies in the bands Theatre of Hate and Ritual.
Bands that were also part of that post punk, early Goth sound and directly related to TSDC include:
The Pack
Crisis
Slaughter and the Dogs
The Nosebleeds
Into A Circle
In Excelsis
Meat of Yout/Slavedrive
Sex Gang Children
(I’ve personally only ever listened to The (Southern) (Death) Cult and Theatre of Hate off of this list.)
Thanks guys!
Ludovic I do like Fields of the Nephilim (what I’ve heard of them) and they are the style I’m looking for.
Larry: Chameleons - check! (“Swamp Thing” is one of my favorite songs). I need to get some of their stuff. I like LPD too, and while they’re not exactly what I’m looking for, I may have to listen to them later.
devilsknew I think I have a Crisis CD around here, and I know I have a Sex Gang Children CD. I’ll have to dig them out. I haven’t heard of some of the other bands though, so I will have to see if I can find a song or two somewhere.
