I danced in the sun today til I got all burned and the music died

Last errk I saw a sign announcing a company cookout today. I went to the Food Services manager and offered to set up a sound system and play tunes, pending my boss’s approval. They both thought it was a great idea, and today I spent about 3 hours in the sun, just rockin’ out.

I have is a real fine little PA sytem with a SounCraft mixer and some very fine JBL powered speakers for special events on the job. Until today, it was used for affter dinner comments, or maybe some soft classical or jazz as audio wallpaper.

Today we got The Stones, Elvis Costello, George Thorogood. It was all my music, my choices (except for a steel drum banc CD and a Beach Boy CD, brought by the Food Manager). She kept calling for more Beach Boys, but everybody around her was giving it a Thumbs Down. So she got Surfer Girl as the first song, and Little Deuce Coupe as the last song I played.

I basically just hopped and danced around the twin CD players to it was all over, at which point I noticed I was a little lobstery and pretty exhausted.

I rocked, I ruled. I’ve already been asked to repeat this at several other company events. Unfortunately my boss did not hire me as a DJ, it is just another thing in my bag of tricks (I was a DJ in college radio many years ago), so letting me do this on the clock on a semi-regular basis may be a hard sell.

Sweet, dude. And if you’re planning on staying at this company for a long time, this should definitely make for good office politics.

As a health care worker in the field of dermatology as of late, I’m required by law to scold you for not wearing sunscreen.

Tsk, tsk.

Oddly enough, this took place at a hospital, though I myself am not a health care worker. No one came up and said, “You’re getting a little too red there, Boyo Jim”. Maybe I can sue.

You’d just be counter-sued for not playing enough Beach Boys. Best not to open up that can of worms.
