I debated with a Repubican and won!! hee-hee!

To start off, let me just add that I really haven’t picked a side in the U.S. prez race (nor do I need to, as I’m not american).

I had a very entertaining conversation with a student from Iowa on Saturday in the Kitchen nightclub. She and her friend sat down at table joining me and my friends. we got talking to the 2 of them about this and that, and so on, and so forth.

about halfway into the evening, she brought up the topic of the presidential race in the U.S. Most of my friends lost interest at this point. we talked alot about current situations. we agreed on a lot of points, but until I mentioned the “Religious Right”'s leaning towards the Republican party. She then got offensive.

“Why does Everybody who isn’t in the US love the Democrats?” she asked me. I pointed out that I couldn’t really care anout wether a person is a republican or democrat. Not good enough for her. I tried to explain my belief in Individual politics. She then told me that it wouldn’t work, that you have to have a party line to follow.
I patiently explained that I don’t like to take orders like a sheep, without thinking for myself about an issue. She then said “well, So do I, but I will take the party line anyway.”

I asked her about prayer in the schools. She said “Whats wrong with prayer in the schools?” I said “nothing at all, its just that if public schools put Christian prayer in place, it could upset people of other religions” she replied that prayer was for all religions. I then said, “what about Atheists?” her reply “I don’t care about that Atheist crap”

She then talked about how religion would never be removed from government, and how there will always be a Christian in Office. I asked her about Liebermann, but she danced around that, saying that Gore wouldn’t win anyway. She then said that She would rather have a president that had good Christian values. again, I said “what about Liebermann?” she said, OK, I dont mind what religion the person is, as long as s/he has good religious morals.
I told her that I was in no way a religious person, would that make me have worse morals than a religious person?
she conceeded the point, and I decided to drop politics altogether.

we talked for another 45 minutes about different things, about how she wanted to be an Actress, and writing, and several small things. Just thought I’d share my first debate with a Republican with you all.

Disclaimer: I in no way assume that all Republicans were like her. I think that maybe she was the only one I was able to articulate against.
question: Am I now going to hell?

Yeah. And when you get there, a lot of us will be there waiting to buy you a drink.

No offense but it sounds more like you debated with an uninformed dope than with an intelligent informed person.

[analogy] When you’re arguing with the blind, they have a difficult time telling you how they see things. [/analogy]

Same thing here…try debating with someone that has a firm grasp of issues, then you can hurrah! Otherwise I would think its an empty victory…

Just my 2 coppers

Isn’t that what he said? He said she was a Republican…

Hmmmmm, an informed republican?

:::::ducks and runs:::::

I’m sure they exist. Just not here in the States.

Probably. But not for the republican. She wants to be an actress? And she’s conservative? Huh. That IS new and different.

Twisty, you experianced one of my favorite games: conservative-baiting. Because I HAVE met a couple of Republicans I can deal with, it’s the conservatives that annoy me. It’s REALLY fun to get them to say something about “Christian values” and then quote scripture to them. In Vermont, the hot topic is civil unions. “I notice you’re wearing a cotton blend sweater. I believe Leviticus 20 called THAT an abomination, too.” Their little heads start spinning in confusion, and eventually fly off all together in a mess of smoke. Or so I’ve heard.

You debated a Re-pubic-an?

Just an observation. I’m a conservative Republican and I never use scripture to help my political views. You do that, you get burned. I, and most of us, prefer to keep the two things separate and it really doesn’t affect our voting. The reason a big deal is made of it during campaigns is to appeal to the religious right. It helps secure a vote from people who tend to lean your way anyway. It’s no different than the Democrats catering to different groups. Both parties do it. Deal with it.

While I’m sure most of these replies were said in jest, I’d be happy to prove that I am very informed without the need to bring religion into it.

The way I see it, both Republicans and Democrats are all idiots. The difference is, Republicans got cash, while Democrats wallow in filth

(Not what I really believe, just tryin’ to cheese Satan off)

Aglarond, I’m sure that there are more intelligent republicans. She didn’t quote scripture.

Bumbazine? Jack daniels on the rocks, please

There may be a few intelligent, informed Republicans out there but where I come from they vote “conservative”. Whatever Reverend Brother So-In-So tells them to do. Because if they don’t the baby-killing, welfare stiffing, queer loving, “liberal” Democrats will send this country to straight to hell! Or maybe they’ll all be “raptured” before it goes that far.

Needs2know

around here it’s the Dems who hit the churches. Heck, my congressthief was a minister a few years ago (I moved)
