I don’t know if I am allowed to ask this type of questions in the forum (or in this board for that matter). If not a moderator will soon point me in the right direction.
I just bought a compactflash reader and found out that my CDRom is kapoot, therefore I can’t install the driver. Is there any way, anywhere that I can download the driver. Sure customer help from Dazzle has been worthless and after looking in Google for 5 hours I found nothing.
First of all, you need to tell the Model No and make. Merely getting the drivers won’t help you, because I think you will need their software too :
Here is what I suggest
1> Fix the CD Drive or Replace it.
2> Clean the cd with a little (very little) soap and water, wipe it clean with a kleenex and try again.
3> Get a USB CD drive from your friend (if you don’t wanna buy one) and use it to install.
4> Take this to another computer having a working CD drive, copy the CD contents to the Hard Drive then transfer using any of the three methods :
a> LAN connection
b> Use another hard drive to copy to and then move the hard drive to your computer
c> Zip the whole files on the CD up. Break it down into 1.44 MB parts, copy to floppies and rebuild in your computer.
a) Insert CD into the CDROM drive of your best friend’s laptop
b) Insert crossover ethernet cable into ethernet port of each machine
c) Set up a small network consisting of your two machines. If you don’t know the IP addresses to use, I’ll post them. (I’m a Mac person, we use AppleTalk in situations like this and don’t need addresses so I’ve forgotten them, sorry. I do have them written down but in a location mildly inconvenient to get to right at the moment.)
d) Set up file sharing on the laptop. Share the CDROM drive.
e) Access the shared drive from your own computer. Run the Setup or Install executable.
How about installing the flash reader on a computer that has a working drive (like at your school’s computer lab?), then e-mailing the pictures to yourself, or just doing your paper there? That strikes me as the by-far simplest temporary solution…
SCM Microsystem’s site has a bunch more drivers, but without more details I can’t be sure which it is: http://www.scmmicro.com/corporate/techsupp.html
(click on “CompactFlash Card Reader Downloads”)
Is your CF reader called Zio, Bella, Lynx-CF, or EUSB-DM? If so, choose the corresponding driver for your OS on that last link.
The problem is that products like these are sometimes sold under many different product names. You might try looking on the CD and/or documentation to see if it mentions the driver file names.
I had to stop by NOW to say THANKS to you guys. I had registered to 5! so called help forums, not even a reply. With you guys I had a wealth of choices and I finally finished my work. Another SDMB happy ending as the Supergeeks save the day again.
I know this is not the place to voice my rants… but this is a minor rant and doing it in the pit will make it like like a non-sequitur… so allow me.
I wil never EVER buy anything from Dazzle or SCM Microsystem’s EVER AGAIN! Their customer service SUCKS! Their website offers no help, they have a forum where the crickets are chirping, the tumbleweeds are rolling and the walls have green mold. I was begging for help and nobody has replied YET. I emailed them, no reply back. I called them, the recording message said that I had to pay 15 USD for a “quick answer” otherwise I had to stay on hold… I am out of the US, after 25 minutes on hold I had spent more in that call than what the frigging CF reader had cost.
