Still can't download my memory card reader...

and now I can’t find my previous thread about it, either. Strange.

In a nutshell: I have an HP Pavilion with Windows 98, and a little thingy on the front with the serquence “6540C” on it. I bought a memory card for my digital camera and plugged it into the socket.
It attempted to download, then told me no driver was available. So I went to fujifilm.com and attempted to dl the driver per the site’s instructions.
When I did that, it told me it was downloaded and opened a pdf file instructing me to plug in my memory card reader and follow the instructions that come up. I did, and nothing.
The driver, even though it says it has installed, is not listed under My Computer. In Device Manager, I have two listings under USB Controllers; one is a USB Root Hub and the other is an Intel 82108AA USB Universal Host Controller.
Previously, urban_chic suggested that I find the USB listing with a (can’t remember which) symbol beside it, click it, and let it do its thing. When I did that, the same result occurs–I eventually, after much hand-wringing and searching on my computer’s part, get a message that says no driver is available.

I’ve tried deleting and re-downloading the driver from fujifilm.com in both Opera and IE. I don’t know what else to do, but I am offering a zillion dollars and my undying gratitude, as well as digital pictures of my lovely children AND my ebay auction items, to anyone who can talk me through this. I’ll even throw in a shipment of free, handcrafted, lovely scented candles.

Seriously, any help? I’m available on messenger, aim, and icq, or by email, if need be.
Thankyouthankyouthankyou.

The card reader doesn’t install under USB Unversal Serial Bus Controllers in the Device Manager under Windows 98. Look under Disk Drives; if the driver is installed, it should appear there. If it is there, but still doesn’t work, highlight it and click Remove, and try installing it again.

Try plugging the reader into the USB port in the back instead of the one in the front.

I checked under Disk Drives, and found these: Generic IDE Disk Type 01, and Generic NEC Floppy. So there isn’t anything to fiddle with, it looks like.

I don’t have a port on the front for it, so it’s already plugged into one of the back ones. There are two, and I’ve tried them both.

This has got to be something simple, right???

What is the model of drive you’re trying to install here?

Stupid question but did you download the file (WHATEVER.EXE) and then INSTALL the drivers? Did you save the .EXE file to somewhere you can access it then double-click it to run it?

Tell us what model you are downloading stuff for.

When you look in your device manager hardware tree listing is there any listed device item anywhere on the chain that currently has an exclamation mark next to it? You may need to click on some of the categories on the hardware tree listing to expand the branch out so you can see all the device listings.

If you remove and re-install and it asks you for drivers do NOT tell it to search. Point it directly to the C:\DPC-UD1 directory. This assumes you have previously chosen “run” (not save) for the the driver download file, and it has installed the drivers. You should have that directory your system and it should have 8 files before removing and re-installing.

My Picture Card Reader won’t work. Help!

I’m trying to install an xD Picture Card, FinePix, Fujifilm reader for my A210 digital camera.

I went through the whole scenario again, so I could outline what’s happening more precisely:

I go to http://home.fujifilm.com and find the download for the Driver Software for the card reader I have. By the download info, I see this:

"This driver is only for Windows 98/98SE. Other Windows OS and Macintosh users do not need to install driver software to your PC.
This uploaded file is compressed, and has to be decompressed after downloading by double-clicking “DPC-UD1.exe” file.
After decompressing, you will find “DPC-UD1” folder which includes PDF file.
Please read that PDF file first ,and install the driver of DPC-UD1. "

I click it to dl it. It saves it to my computer, and then opens the aforementioned PDF file, which tells me to connect the DPD-UD1, with a picture card inserted, into the USB, and (here we go) When the Driver Wizard opens, click "Next."

And there’s the problem. When I plug in the DPD-UD1 with picture card inserted, it does nothing. Nada. Zip. Unlike the very first time I plugged it in, when it actually tried to install itself before it decided there was no driver available.

Did I give you enough info?

Hope that last didn’t sound sarcastic; the kids distracted me.

Astro, I checked all the listings and there is nothing with an exclamation mark next to it.

I’ll go try to dl it again, making sure to use “run”. I think I’ve tried it already, but maybe karma is involved or something…

If you have been doing it the previous way you described all you were doing is saving the compressed driver file on your system. Running it creates the driver directory & extacts the required drivers.

Well, on the fujifilm site I can either choose to Open or Save the .exe file. But regardless of which I choose, all I’m getting is the pdf file. This line from the site: “After decompressing, you will find “DPC-UD1” folder which includes PDF file.” makes me think that the file must be downloaded and decompressed, else I wouldn’t get the pfd, would I?
I just checked for the exe file and it’s not showing up. This is weird.

Do you currenntly have directory on your c: drive named C:\DPC-UD1 with eight files in it?

Have you done a find for the “DPC-UD1.exe” file? Start ->Find->files or folders, type in DPC-UD1.exe in the named box and hit find. If it comes up double click on it and see what happens.

Slee

Slee, when I run a find, it comes up with no files found.

Astro, I have a file folder marked DPC-UD1, but it only has 7 files in it: Three notepad files, an Acrobat update file, an uninstall file, a pdf file, and the DPC-UD1 file, which, if I doubleclick it, opens the pdf file.

The necessary inf file is probably there also, but your viewer options are set to exclude it from being vsible.

Do whatever you do to re-start the install process and point the driver install applet to that directory,

There’s the thing…I can’t restart the install process because nothing is happening anywhere. When I plug in the USB, it doesn’t open up a wizard or anything. I can’t find the files when I run a search, so I can’t do a “run” on it either.
Can I change my viewer options so that I can find the sucker if it’s there?
