Oh my.
That would be in the coach, yes. A nicer coach than you’ll find in the Corridor, but a coach nonetheless. And the fare does not include meals; you’re on your own for that. I’ve always got a sleeper on overnight rail journeys, which (on the train you’d take, anyway) includes meals in the dining car.
As for why the train no longer goes via Thunder Bay and the north shore of Superior–complain to CP Rail. They have decided that they no longer want to lease running rights to VIA, so VIA trains use CN tracks as much as possible. And the CN route from Toronto to Vancouver goes via such exciting places as Hearst, Nakina, and Sioux Lookout. It’s the CP route that follows the shore of Superior.
Here in Alberta, various interests are trying to get a Calgary-Red Deer-Edmonton corridor passenger rail service going. The most direct existing rail is CP’s, and CP doesn’t like the idea at all. But I don’t want to hijack this thread further–Sunspace, if you’d like to hear more about the train trip, call me at my Calgary number–I’m in Calgary for the next while.
My, trains ARE expensive. That would be the cross-coutry trip through Canada, from one ocean to another? Sounds spectacular, BTW. Flying is ridiculously cheap in comparison; 550 dollars wil get you from Toronto to Amsterdam, return trip, via Paris.
I was thinking about that, and thought that that included two days worth of meals, but the Spoons mentioned that the meals were extra…
I worked out on my bicycle (in its new stand) this morning before going to work. I’m working up to doing some cardio exercise each day when I wake.
Wait. Guy does a hundred sit ups and has wimmins waiting for him at the train station?
If I do 200, anyone coming to see me?
BTW - Sunspace, great job – Ignore the naysayers about if that’s a good way to build muscle or lose weight. It’s a measurement - could you do that before? No? Now you can, this makes you stringer in at least one way than you were.
Thanks, Mr Bus Guy. I–
Wait, wait! Someone said there were women actually waiting? I was saying, warn them so they can put on their running shoes or peril-sensitive sunglasses or whatever…
What’s the cost for a 3500-km train trip in Europe?
This is the Western Transcontinental train, only part of the journey; it goes from Toronto to Vancouver. There’s another train from the East Coast to Montréal and Toronto.
Oh, I’m pretty sure that if I informed some young and attractive Edmonton ladies of my acquaintance that an educated and accomplished artist and writer would be getting off the train and looking for a workout partner, a few of them would be glad to be waiting at the station.
BTW, as to distances crossing Canada by rail, here is one sample route (distances in kilometers, taken from VIA’s timetables):
Halifax NS to Montreal QC: 1346
Montreal QC to Toronto ON: 539
Toronto ON to Vancouver BC: 4466
So the total distance to travel as a passenger coast-to-coast from Halifax NS to Vancouver BC is 6351 km (approx 3800 miles).
Sunspace, if you’re interested, the distance of the train trip from Toronto to Edmonton is 3221 km.
Well, if you put it that way…
Says you :dubious: I decided in August that I want to be in shape by my 30th birthday come April. Though I’ve only lost ~15 pounds so far, I’ve also lost 4.5" off my waist at the same time. I can’t believe that the tummy crunches I’ve been doing daily since late September don’t have a fair amount do with my shrinking waist. OTOH, I do a whole lot more than 100 a day, so ymmv.
Dammit I hate you. Now you made me feel guilty.
Where the hell did we put that slob reform thread?
*EDIT: Sheesh they are all tidying up. I must have a different definition of slob to everyone else. *
Looks like I’ll have to speed up!
