I do find one foot of snow in less than 24 hours a tad excessive.

Mmm, beautiful, icy death.

Watch out, terminal moraine!

Not quite on the same scale, but even after the snow had gone, the neighbour’s satellite dish was sprouting killer icicles. I think there was water dripping from an overflow pipe above. You don’t expect icicles round here in late March!

BTW it was the coldest Easter Sunday on record in the UK, with temperatures down to -12.5C (9.5F) in Scotland. Even down here in the balmy south it’s being getting down to -7C.

Northern Piper, given the risks of walking about on a roof in the winter while trying to remove ice and snow, how about installing a de-icing system for your roof and eves so that you can deal with the problem with a flick of a switch?

I’m not Northern Piper, but from what I’ve heard, those things don’t really work, at least not in areas with big winters. They’re a band-aid, not a solution.

A properly-built roof has decent ventilation, insulation, and pitch, and doesn’t easily build up ice dams. If you have big problems with ice dams, you fix those problems. We did - the roof above our garage was not properly insulated. It took about $1500 to blow in some insulation, and we haven’t seen a leak since (cross your fingers!). Even previously, it wasn’t that huge of a problem. It only happened on years where there was a lot of snow and a couple warm weeks.

I could be wrong, but I can’t imagine that an electric de-icing system exists that will keep your roof clear of snow/ice for 4-6 month winters without either 1) not being able to keep up, resulting in ice/snow covering warm cables which I imagine would be the worst thing possible (you don’t want to trap water under a sheet of snow or ice) or 2) not be as cost-effective as just fixing the problem to begin with.

Light snow again in London this morning. It’s April now. Time to stop this foolishness.

I don’t know what you guys have done with the Gulf Stream, but we’d quite like it back now please.

: sob : It’s snowing!

Drinking heavily in bed is looking more and more attractive.

: sob :

Interesting historical fact: mole people originated in Saskatchewan in the Great Winter of 1886, after evolving to tunnel through the snow between their homes and their barns.

<sigh> I bet you’re getting the storm that’s moving to us tomorrow. There’s a “Special Weather Statement” out that predicts 2-5" of heavy, wet snow tonight/tomorrow. Saturday is looking just miserable.

I’m stocking up on liquor and food and will watch movies or play video games all day, and have fond memories of seasons like “Spring” and “Summer” that I fear I will never see again.

There are wisps of snow in the air in Ottawa today. Enough already!

It was 68°F earlier today. Tonight we are going to get rain, changing over to snow, and by the end of it we are supposed to get, yep, a foot. Temps will be in the single digits tomorrow night. We’ll have a 24 hour temperature drop of 60°.

Northeast of here, in eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska and South Dakota, it will be even worse, with 18-24 inches predicted along with the cold and howling winds. It will be deadly blizzard conditions on April 9th. There’s a good chance my kid will get a snow day tomorrow.

All in all, it’s not a bad thing, we can really use the moisture. But I did think I had retired the shovel for the season.

Tornado Alley is going to brutal Tuesday and Wednesday on the warm side of this storm.

So, Piper, how about this cold?

Yeah, we’ve set record lows for 2 days in a row now. It’s -18C right now with a windchill of -27.

Your question assumes I’m out and about and experiencing it, not still lying in bed, self-medicating with my rye.

You guys are making me feel better about our heavy snowfall, but hovering around zero temperatures. The weather channel says we should get up to about 6ºC and rain this afternoon - fingers crossed! I don’t have to shovel rain!

Winter Storm Warning here, starting at 7pm tonight and lasting until 2am Saturday. Depending on what forecast I read, we could see anywhere from 7 to 14" of snow.

Will it ever end? I’m going to take **Northern Piper’**s lead and start self-medicating soon.

Mt. Bohemia at the top of the Keweenaw Penninsula is opening up for the weekend, so if you are into terrific tree skiing, head up there.

I’ll bogged down with work, so I’ll only make it as far as Lutsen at the west end of the lake.

Like it or not, the snow is here, so might as well enjoy the heck out of it.

I’d enjoy it if it were good snow; around here, it’s been icy, crappy snow for the last two weeks. Warm up-melt-freeze-get another snowfall-repeat isn’t a formula for fun snow.

Actually, I’m lying. I like snow, I like winter, but this winter has gotten even to me. Even if we got 2’ of great snow I’d still sit inside and bitch because I want it to be spring.

[Piper staggers out of bed; looks out window]

“The snow! the snow that was falling this morning has turned into freezing rain! Granted, it’s coating everything with a layer of ice, but: rain! Rain means spring, right?”

[At this point, I’ll take whatever I can get by way of encouragement…]

Yes my frozen brother to the north it does. Soon the sun shall shine, flowers will bloom and birdies will chirp happily while building their nests. Yes Northern Piper there is a Spring.

Cheers
