I Don’t Care If Trump Doesn’t Spend a Day in Prison

Thirded

Fourthed. This was beautifully said.

I can’t understand the federal level fear of putting a president in jail. The state level equivalent would be governors, and here in Illinois we have no problem putting governors in prison.

Not sure if we have ever had 70,000,000 people that only want their guy, and are willing to do anything to keep/get them elected.

But we need this solved. I’m not calling for violence. Justice would be just fine.

Four of your last eleven governors went to prison. If prison is an effective deterrence for political corruption, how are we to explain the most recent three?

My view is that the value of punishment is wildly overestimated on the Internet.

In the case of presidential corruption, a politician with those inclinations would expect to rely on a self-pardon.

I’m not opposed to sending crooked politicians to prison for clear violations of ordinary laws, but I find it hard to believe that it deters.

I don’t see this as any reason not to throw Trump into a prison. After a conviction, of course. Which should be easy if someone only tried.

Punishment, and/or deterrence are not the point. I’m all for punishing that piece of crap, but that is not the point. I also don’t think making him serve his time will deter the next nut job that cons his way into office.

What I’m concerned with is justice for the country he fleeced, embarrassed, trashed, and drove further apart. I’m concerned about equity. Our legal system is already weighted heavily toward those who have money and/or power. I honestly feel if he walks, it will just make the disparity more stark. He was the President, the most powerful and ideally admired person in the world, and he betrayed and besmirched the office, the country, and our system of laws. He needs to pay for his crimes like anyone else should. Hell, he should be held to a MUCH higher standard not a lower one.

This. Clearly he doesn’t know jack shit. But I don’t care. He had the power of his office to have advisers show him right from wrong. They did. He ignored them (see the insurrection) He needs to be held to the letter of the law.

And if he isn’t? Which seems possible, and even likely on some days. I’m preaching how you might live with that result.

Not sure how to parse that.

I’m a white male. I’ll be fine. I don’t have that long to live. But I feel a duty to fellow humans, and the earth itself.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

After World War II, Niemöller openly spoke about his own early complicity in Nazism and his eventual change of heart. His powerful words about guilt and responsibility still resonate today.

This is the road that we are on, we must choose the correct path ~ enipla

Very well stated, I still want him sent Parchment Farm in Louisiana-General Population. Having 2 or 3 dozen prison-husbands

Hey welcome to our community! We generally shy away from prison rape jokes, but I get the desire to lock the bastard up. (We’re generally cool about calling Trump a bastard.)

Welcome to the Straight Dope.

I’d like to point out, that while many of us support your position of distaste, prison rape jokes are less popular.

Moderating:

While “prison-husbands” doesn’t expressly imply prison rape, it’s uncomfortably adjacent. I encourage you to avoid these type of references going forward, as others have likewise encouraged you to do.

Welcome to the board.

Apologies. Will stay away from expressing violent fantasies no matter how deserved. This is not the forum
