So the mods can’t necessarily come up with a bright line between words that are offensive and words that are non-offensive, and have to do their best to judge things based on their own experience, the context, etc. So what? How else could it possibly work? I feel like you’re trying to gotcha everyone, like we’re all claiming that we’ve conclusively proved something, and you’re going to prove that we haven’t… but there’s no there there.
And yes, one poster once used the word “inherently”. OMG!
Meanwhile, the good ladies of Feminism, Inc., who quite literally invented all this laugh their azzes off while the men argue with and eviscerate each other, while the ladies build the Matriarchy and plot further decline for men, Black and White and Hispanic alike and more goodies for themselves.
Anyone notice the SJW/liberal wings of journalism, Huff-Post, NOW, Planned Parenthood and the rest of the alphabet soup of Feminsm, Inc is a White-Lady’s Wonderland? It’s quite an offensive against men if you examine it. All upper-class, college “educated” WHITE women. Oh, there’s the occasional Asian lady, but very, very few POC and no men, except of course, the token gay/transgender (feminists hate the gay men and transgendered, but they’ll use them, as they will use the races against White men).
I did commercial telecom in Washington from 1983-2009, installed and serviced phones in all those PAC offices and while everyone else in Washington was integrating, Feminism, Inc. never did and never has to this day. Wonder when Black and Hispanic women wake up to it?
And I wonder when men of all stripes take a look at reality and understand the Patriarchy is toast, we are now ruled by a tyrannical Matriarchy known collectively as Feminism. It’s the truth. And the end of Hillary’s every speech: “Educational, employment opportunity and Social Justice, especially for WOMEN!!!”. This thread is a small yet obvious example of the stuff Feminism, Inc. developed as strategy and just LOOK how the men are at each others’ throats while Feminism steals the last morsels and begrudge the men any tiny scrap.
Well, I suppose they could. Here, I’ll do one: “nigger and cunt are off limits, everythign else is fine”. But that’s a ridiculous way to do it, because it just encourages people to find whatever expletive is the most offensive one not currently on the list, and use the list as a get-out-of-jail-free card.
But again, who cares? It’s not like we’re discussing the US legal system, where actual people’s lives are affected, and it’s important that the laws be fair and well understood. It’s just some people doing their best to be as fair as possible. Is there imperfect human judgment involved? Might there be cases where one mod would issue a warning and another might not? Sure. Is it even possible that (gasp) mods are influenced in what language they find offensive by their positions on various political and social issues? Sure thing. So?
While I agree that relying on a random person’s opinion is pretty much meaningless, when it comes to transgender issues saying Una’s opinion/experience is just an anecdote is a little like saying an explanation of relatively is just Albert Einstein’s or Stephen Hawking’s opinion. The opinion of a true expert should be weighted more heavily than that of a random person.
I agree a mod called me on it. I don’t necessarily agree with the note but arguing with a mod in the Pit is forbidden, and I don’t care enough to start a thread in ATMB
Really? I would be extremely surprised if you can produce a single post not said sarcastically or satirically that would lead a person to believe I am a bigot. Or can’t you be assed to find proof of your own accusations?
I don’t think this is a bad thing. What about ‘prick’? Like “That guy is a prick!”
So nothing. If someone came out and said that - “I’m a mod, and I’m gonna warn, note, and/or ban people based on my own positions on various political and social issues” I would take that in a second. At least that’s honest and upfront. As I think I stated before, if someone said “You are a white, straight, male, cisgendered person. You don’t have the right to be offended by any words because no words would have years of denigration, oppression, and downright violence associated with them” I would also love to hear that. Again, honesty.
I have no idea what you’re saying. Obviously I don’t think that there are only two offensive words in the English language.
So there are things which, if people said them, there are reactions that you would have. Gotcha.
But how about if instead of your fever dream fantasy I said something like “epithets directed against majority groups who have traditionally held power are less hurtful, all other things being equal, than epithets directed against minority groups who have traditionally been victimized. But of course it depends on the context”?
And of course there’s a difference between “I’m a Democrat, so I’m going to ban Republicans, becauseI can” and “I’m a human being and will do my best to be objective, but I’m not, say, a judge with years of legal training and a richly developed ethics code; so if I fall short of perfect objectivity from time to time it’s not evidence of some underlying conspiracy or whatnot”.
I was just throwing another word out there that might be on the “Instant Warning” list. You don’t think so?
This is a wishy-washy non-answer. In what context that you can conceive would someone be warned for calling a white, straight, cisgender male some sort of slur that applied to only white, straight, cisgender males? “Redneck”? “White Trash”? “Trailer Trash”? In some other boards I frequent, people call Americans “Septics” as a derogatory comment. Should that be an automatic warning here at the Dope?
I don’t think there should be an “instant warning” list. I was mere exploring a hypothetical, and explaining why I am opposed to it.
Then get ready for disappointment, because that’s how life is. What are the precise rules for when it’s acceptable for a straight person to use the word “queer”? Well, I can think of a lot of times when it’s clearly OK, and a lot of times when it’s clearly not, but I can’t precisely defined the boundary. Life is like that. Suck it up.
Fair enough, but i’m sure there IS an “instant warning” list.
Are you serious? There are no times that a straight person can call a gay person “queer” Just like there are no times that a white person can call a black person a “nigger” Is this really news to you? Those are clearly defined boundaries.
She also took the time to explain why at least some people might find it offensive, because it references pre-transition gender status. But, of course, you blasted right past that because it’s not the answer you want to hear.
But in the scope of things, she is still only one person. Does she speak for the entire transgender community?
Actually, I’m uncomfortable talking about what she thinks with you instead of her, so I’ll drop this. I’m more interested in you providing posts that I made that lead people to believe I’m a bigot. So, why don’t you get on that, or retract your hateful statement.
“So, Frank, as a queer activist, what do you think of the recent issues relating to…” etc.
You’re WAY out of date if you think “queer” is anywhere near the same category as “nigger”. “Faggot” is probably a little closer, but I might in certainly very clearly informal situations, with someone I really know, teasingly refer to him as a “faggot”, which I don’t think I would do with “nigger”.
But, as always, you’re missing the point entirely. There are gray areas! Sometimes the answer is wishy-washy! Get used to it!
Well, please point out where I said “queer” and “nigger” were in the same category.
And I would NEVER say “as a queer activist”
And also you are relating YOUR personal experience with calling people “faggots” Why would you think that is teasing? I honestly cannot comprehend that.
Maybe we are just on different pages on what is acceptable to call your friends. In my opinion, no matter how may friends may say “You can say ‘faggot’ because I know you” I would never do that. Same with “nigger” or “Jap” or “Paki” or “Towel head” or whatever. I guess we are just on different wavelengths or something.
