I don't get the "hate" for Canada

Step 2 is easy. Yo yo on the tariff – “I’m gonna do it. No I’ve changed my mind. Now I’m mad at them again.” – and take a long or short position, depending, a half hour before you say it.

I don’t know anyone who hates Canada, but I don’t associate with out-loud Trumpers.

I love Canada and Canadians. I wish I was one, seriously.

Plus, I visited the HoF on Flyers day and got in on a discount. Also, I ate at the top of the CN Tower and rode the Maid of the Mist. And got breakfast at Tim Horton’s almost every morning. I think citizenship should be conferred automatically.

Canadian dopers, make this happen please!

It was just a riff on another South Park dumb idea, the underwear gnomes. They had it all figured out:

Step 1: Steal the underwear
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit

Between that and President Garrison, maybe Matt and Trey should either stop making predictions, or at least predict good things instead of things that most of the world considered too stupid to actually happen.
For those who didn’t watch South Park, Mr Garrison ran for, and was elected as, president a few years before Trump ran.

Those Canadians have a reputation of being POLITE! And they’ve gone metric. And they have Healthcare. And I’ve read on the interweb, so it MUST be true, that 90% of the Canadian population lives less than 50 miles from the US border. And they sent the US Justin Bieber, Helen Reddy, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and The Guess Who.

Yes, I know. It’s just his nibs has the mystery step all figured out.

No, that episode aired literally the day after the 2016 election, not several years before. Apparently a lot of content was changed at the last minute, as they did not expect that result. It was the opposite of predictive

When I was growing up, Canada was our ONLY neighbor, and we had a special affection for it and its people. I’ve traveled the western provinces quite a bit, the eastern less so; it’s a beautiful country with a lot to offer.

I don’t know where you live, however, as a Canadian I will say that the trade war isn’t the issue so much as:

  • Trump’s rhetoric associated with the trade war;
  • Trump’s attitude overall towards Canada; but especially
  • The 51st state crap.

A lot of us actually worry and/or believe that at this point in history, the US is so unpredictable and untrustworthy that actual conquest of Canada - militarily or economically or otherwise - is not an idea to be dismissed.

If Biden or Obama, using their skills as orators, imposed tariffs with a believable rationale and not done politely, for me it would be an “it is what it is” type of situation without the US becoming an enemy. In this Trump-world, however, AFAIC, the US is now a threat, if not an actual enemy.

I get that from the Canadian side. But the question is why an American might hate Canadian-owned businesses. Siding with Trump’s rhetoric on the trade war is the most likely issue for them.

Okay, getting pissed about them sending us Justin Bieber is fair.

I’m guessing the person that wrote that hates every country that’s NOT America. Probably admires Russia and North Korea also.

Don’t forget Shania Twain.

And Anne Murray.

Sure, they got their national health care,
Cheaper meds, low crime rates and clean air,
Then again, well, they got Celine Dion…

@Elmer_J.Fudd yes, that does make more sense.

And William Shatner, the classiest actor ever, who recently lent the first syllable of his last name to the attempted sale of Raisin Bran, i.e. “Will Shat.”

And Helen Reddy is Australian. We don’t deserve the blame for that one

I’ve seen plenty of people pushing back on the popular stereotype of Canada as a progressive unproblematic pseudo socialist utopia, but yeah, outright hate is usually on the part of either folks who hate the West as a whole or Canadians of certain demographics screwed over by the country past or present.

Canada: a luxury apartment over a meth lab.
