As one of the few truly panforumic posters on the Straight Dope, allow me to point out which forum has absolutely the least to do with fighting ignorance: Great Debates - rarely more than a psuedo-intellectual wankfest coupled with intractable prejudice. Some threads and posters are interesting, most others are not. Yes, I sometimes still post there, when it’s worth my ultra high and mighty while.

Which forums do the most for fighting ignorance? Comments on Cecil’s Columns and ** Comments on Staff Reports**

Sometimes, some very deep and cogent thoughts are discussed in MPSIMS. Check it out from time to time. But mostly, it’s there simply for fun.

By the way, if any of you need help with some of the difficult words in this post, here’s a good place for you to look.

NCB, bro’… it’s irksome when a thread you think has merit is closed, and sometimes it does piss you off when you think you have a good thing going, but you know, having run and been Admin of your own Board, that Cajun Man has guidelines to follow in the forum he’s a Mod of. Some of these guidelines are set above him at the Admin level, and some are even higher, at the Chicago Reader level. And some off course are set by the Mods of the forum as an effort to try to make the forum a good balance of light and heavy, funny and serious, inane and useful. He didn’t warn you or anyone over it, and in fact he even put his use of “crap” in quotes, which was in line with the thread title.

I think you may want to, in the spirit of the season and the holiday, not take the thread closing to heart so much, and recognize that Cajun Man has a job to do and he has to do it. Few people enjoy being the “wet blanket”, and I don’t think Cajun Man is one of those - he’d much rather have people having fun and enjoying themselves than not. So although I disagree with you, for which I guess that means you say to me “FUCK YOU” as per your second post in this thread, I do wish you would just say “Oh well” and not call Cajun Man a “dickweed”. Knowing you for being a stand-up guy, I don’t think you really think he deserves that.

Una, you are a class act, as always. And you’re right. Running my own place for a year caused me to look at things in a slightly different light concerning Mod and Admin actions. In that post, I still think CM was dickweed, but over all I know he’s got a job to do and I commend him for his efforts.

So. let me put it this way:

Stop with the digs about post counts. Eliminate the counts if it seems like such a threat to the SDMB, as I’ve said both publicly and privately many times. And while I can’t expect any clear cut concrete rules, being a little less arbitrary in Mod/Admin actions would be appreciated.

As you’re such a fan of research, perhaps this tidbit will interest you. MPSIMS is the most popular forum on this board. It has the most posts and is the most visited. Any large community eventually develops a social aspect to it. While it may seem to someone with no social skills that it serves no purpose, those who have will happily tell you such interaction makes the mundane drudgery of daily existence enjoyable.
Social interaction is as necessary in life as food or drink. Or one devolves to nothing more than a mechanical drone. An ingrown toenail of a human being who can only take petty pride in their supposed superiority, because they are unable to grasp the importance of cameraderie.

Oh, and I greatly apologize for mis spelling “indisputable.” I hope my correction sets your mind at ease.

How strange, I kinda feel the same about mine, not that mine are from being unemployed, but from being unattached. To me, they’re not a point of pride, but a reminder that “yup, when you’re not at work, here you are, taking your mind off of your singlehood”.

And I especially feel that when I notice that folks who joined long before me have much lower counts. Yikes, they have an acutal life beyond working and the dope. :smiley:

Firstly, the board’s inception as the SDMB was four or five months before I joined. Before that, the board existed on AOL, of which I did not participate.

Secondly, using my join date to rebut the “MPIMS is crap” argument is still ad hominem, and has nothing to do with MPIMS being or not being crap.

Thirdly, using the fact that I’ve been here a long time as an argument against me is just one of the most freakin’ stupidest ad hominem arguments I’ve heard in a long time, especially since I never claimed any special privilege or authority as being a ‘long time poster.’ You just assumed that. You’re the calendar watcher, cupcake, not me.

Notice, I never made the argument for doing away with the crap. Crap has utility. Though, by definition the P in MPSIMS would indicate a complete lack of utility of the mundane stuff people feel they must share there, so maybe it’s worse than crap.

This board was established for the fans of Cecil Adams and the pursuit of fighting ignorance. Sure it’s nice if people make personal connections socially (though, I know I always keep in mind that the person one would want to befriend online may not be in real life who they present themselves to be online). And sure it’s nice if they share MPS (otherwise known as crap). But don’t kid yourselves, it’s called Pointless for a reason. And it’s segregated from the other forums which are the heart of the fandom base.

And, getting back to the OP, one shouldn’t be all uptight over a Mod intervention in a forum dedicated to MPS/crap and its tendency to post pad (whether intentionally or unintentionally).

“Ad hominem” has been used on this board 750 times in 2 years and 2 months. It’s a common term on this board, not some high-falutin’ big word meant to confuse you, though, ironically, it did.

Meh. I’ve been insulted by Cajun Man. Lots of people have. It’s no big deal. Personally, I don’t care how many posts I’ve made, although I do sometimes look at other posters’ counts. I do know that much of what I post is Mundane and Pointless. Interestingly, I often get more responses to those posts than I do to the ones that offer actual information. YMMV.

By the way, I enjoyed the linked “crap” thread. I’m sorry I didn’t get to post in it. If I had, my post would have been something like:
